Are University of California Admittance Policies wrong?

As the fall semester approaches and college freshmen prepare to start school, there is renewed criticism of the University of California’s decision, implemented over the last few years at all or nearly all of the system’s campuses, to increase the number and percentage of out-of-state and international college students. The harshest criticism comes from those California students (and their parents) who are finding it increasingly hard to be admitted to UC campuses, especially the most competitive ones like UC Berkeley. Many of these students and parents worry that the University system, motivated by a desire to obtain out-of-state tuition monies, is admitting lesser qualified people from outside California in such a way as to displace more highly qualified California applicants who otherwise might be admitted. Critics feel this is a betrayal of the University’s basic purpose, which is to serve the needs of the State. After all, it was California citizens and taxpayers who created the UC and built it up into

the best public higher education system in the world. In the space below, I try to debunk some of the myths and misstatements concerning this controversy, and to shed light on the crux of the problem.

Education Group Announces All-Out War On Campus Speech Codes

The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), a group advocating free speech on college campuses, announced Tuesday that it is launching a major legal offensive against universities it says are enforcing illegal speech codes.

“Universities’ stubborn refusal to relinquish their speech codes must not be tolerated,” FIRE president Greg Lukianoff said at press conference held by the organization.

Currently, the group will back four lawsuits against four different schools for alleged violations of speech rights. The lawsuits involve a diverse array of campus incidents.

For lawsuits against Iowa State University and Ohio University, the challenge is over restrictions on the design of T-shirts for campus organizations.

Starbucks Plans to Send Its Employees to College for Free

Working at Starbucks is now a smarter move.

The coffee chain plans to launch a new program on Monday that will pay for its employees to attend online college classes at Arizona State University.

Gov. Pat Quinn signs Illinois early education law

CHICAGO — Gov. Pat Quinn has signed a plan into law that guarantees a higher percentage of state grant money be set aside for early education.

The state’s $300 million Early Education Block Grant program is geared toward children up to age 5.

Quinn signed the legislation Wednesday in Chicago. It says at least 14 percent of the money must be set aside for children up to age 3. That’s up from 11 percent.

Common Core Lesson Teaches that America is a Racist Nation

The United States Constitution gives no authority to the federal government over education. In fact, since education is not listed as an enumerated power within the authority of the federal government, by law, the authority of education is left in the hands of state and local governments. But, that has not stopped the federal government from attempting to get their grubby hands all over the education of youth.

Ever since the establishment of the Department of Education by then President Jimmy Carter, we have witnessed states scrambling to meet the requirements as set forth by the feds. Republican presidents have even infringed on the state’s authority over education. A prime example is George W. Bush’s ‘No Child Left Behind’ law. 

Much has been made of the nonsensical Math lessons courtesy of Common Core and the elimination of the great classics of literature in favor of informative, progressive pieces. However, one lesson that should concern Americans comes courtesy of Barack Obama himself. His biography has been, not surprisingly, designated as an approved piece of Common Core literature. As a result, 4th graders in some parts of America are being taught a narrative as reality that we have witnessed the President and his lackey media push over the last 5 years. Our children are being taught that America is, at its core, a racist nation.

THE “10 BEST CITIES IN ILLINOIS?”

The city-ranking team, including their mascot, Mo the owl, at Movoto Real Estate’s blog (“The lighter side of real estate”) ranked the top 10 best cities in Illinois based on a variety of criteria. They ranked the 50 top municipalities in the state from 1 to 50 (1 being the best) in six categories: amenities, cost of living, crime, education, employment and home value. The cities are assigned a “Big Deal” score and ranked from one to 10. The state’s biggest city, Chicago, did not make the top 10 list. Nor, for that matter, did any downstate cities.

Other factors, such as median income and tax burden, were not factored in, but may play an important role in quality of living. Movoto also ranked the top 10 most affordable places in Illinois, and none of the cities on the “best” list appeared on the most affordable list.

Northbrook, Ill. came in at number one on the list. The blog said:

You know what else sounds good about Northbrook? Their education system. Northbrook came in first here, 15 percent higher than the rest of Illinois when it comes to high school graduation rates. But that shouldn’t be a surprise, really, with the quintessential Glenbrook North High School—one of the main places used to film the teen classic, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”. In fact, director John Hughes even attended Gleenbrook North himself.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE CHARTS ILLINOIS’ DECLINE IN GOVT., QUALITY OF LIFE MEASUREMENTS

In its editorial on Sunday,  the Chicago Tribune revisited a 2010 analysis in which it looked at many aspects of Illinois — taxes, education, unemployment and many others — to determine how it measured up to other states. The findings in most categories showed a decline that reflects the continuing downward spiral of Illinois state government’s finances.

Should a Public Middle School Grammar Teacher Be Able to Teach a Lesson About the “N Word”? - Education, Speech and Religion

This past September, a Northern District of Illinois Federal District Court Judge ruled that Chicago public middle-school teacher Lincoln Brown—who had taught a lesson about the “N Word” in his classroom, and was subsequently suspended without pay for five days for doing so—stated a First Amendment claim against the local school board where he taught, due to that suspension.
