As 2014 comes to an end, we thought it might be fun to ask what old tech you wish was new.
I really miss my BlackBerry… without a doubt, the #1 cry:
1. The physical keyboard, the blinking red light — and in the early days the status symbol it carried. The dorky signature “(Sent from my BlackBerry. Please pardon typos).” —Oz Benamram, chief knowledge officer at White & Case.
2. Typing on a BlackBerry is easier than on any other device I’ve used, including tablets. And the Word Substitution function is a big time saver. Unfortunately, there are other drawbacks that make it impractical for me to rely exclusively on a Blackberry today. —Judy Selby, partner, Baker & Hostetler.
3. Many of us in IT were among the first to try the BlackBerry 850/950 as a first step in toward firmwide use of wireless email devices (most of us choose the 957 model for our lawyers). They had a four line, green LCD display for mail—they were revolutionary, almost magical devices. We felt elite to be among the first law firm users in the country to have one! —Scott Christensen, director of technology and information security at Edwards Wildman Palmer.

The practice of law in the future, the near future, will surely include wearable technology, apps for your iPhone or cloud computing. With technology changing at a faster pace than the cherry blossoms, Julie Sobowale wrote in the Canadian Bar Association’s National Magazine some tips and picks on what tools lawyers of the future can employ today.
  • Wearable technology: With respect to wearable technology—and the most popular piece to date, Google Glass—Sobowale said the reviews are mixed for lawyers.  Notably, there are privacy and security concerns, she said, such as taking photos and recording video without consent.  Recently, however, a lawyer in California used Google Glass to record depositions during a trial, with permission of the court of course.  Look for similar such uses in the future.
