Big data and the cloud have a profound impact on business operations in almost any industry today, allowing companies of all sizes to more effectively serve customers, perform risk-analyses and create new revenue streams.

In its recent CEO Survey and Technology Forecast,PricewaterhouseCoopers identified these tools, along with mobile and social apps, as transformative technologies that are not only impacting traditional businesses but creating new ones.

1. Pulmonary Apps has developed a wireless stethoscope that allows doctors to monitor multiple patients remotely and in real-time. The device is designed to eliminate infections spread by traditional stethoscopes. It can detect and transmit lung sounds to a smartphone, tablet or computer wirelessly, and allows hands-free auscultation of the chest.

Some experts think that cloud computing could cut corporate IT costs by half. Because of their scale, cloud providers can ostensibly pay for the best in technology and expertise, which translates into better reliability and security than a company could manage in-house. The cloud also adds flexibility, with usage-based fee structures and the ability to scale performance up higher than any typical corporate IT department could even dream of. With such a formidable upside, there needs to be a considerable downside for cloud adoption to be even debatable. Unfortunately, there is.

Application virtualization can reduce risks to mobile devices, but cloud computing could still foil plans for enterprise security. IT professionals need to deal with workers who use cloud-based file storage and productivity services for both personal and business purposes.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), along with other agencies, was tasked
by the U.S. Chief Information Officer with specific activities aimed at accelerating the adoption of
cloud computing [11]. These include the delivery of a US Government Cloud Computing
Technology Roadmap and the creation of other NIST Special Publications (NIST SPs) that address
the definitions, security aspects, and reference architecture of Cloud Computing. In furtherance of
its statutory responsibilities, NIST has developed a series of Special Publications aimed at
accelerating the Cloud Computing adoption by Federal agencies:
