I’m a cop.

A few weeks ago, two of my beat partners and I were called to an apartment in a fairly nice complex to help a mother and father with their 16-year-old son.

The son had no criminal history, and by all accounts was a decent kid. But he was having some problems at home — breaking things and making threats with a knife — and the parents needed our help.

When we finally located the son, who is of mixed ethnicity (dad is white, mom is Hispanic), he instantly began cussing and yelling at us. He took a fighting stance and said he was not going to do anything we told him.

Saying there is no such thing as a legal right to clean running water, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes dismissed a request from Detroit residents to impose a six-month moratorium on water shutoffs by the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) on Monday.

The plaintiffs had argued last week that the DWSD shutoffs over delinquent water bills violated the human rights of impoverished citizens who had no ability to pay what the city says they owe, and who were left without access to clean water by the shutoff policy.

“There is no such right or law,” Rhodes said, according to the Detroit News. He also rejected the idea that citizens have a right to “service based on an ability to pay.”

Those remarks are notable because Rhodes didn’t even have to speak to the substance of the plaintiffs’ arguments. Bankruptcy law doesn’t give him the power to force the city to take the sort of action the plaintiffs requested, so Rhodes could have dismissed the request on simple procedural grounds.

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Five people were killed--including a 13-year-old boy--and at least 43 others were wounded in shootings across the city over the weekend.

The boy was found shot to death about 8:35 p.m. Sunday in the South Side Chicago Lawn neighborhood.

Officers responding to a call of a person shot in the 6600 block of South Talman found 13-year-old Demureya Macon on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the torso, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Macon, of the 3400 block of North Odell, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:36 p.m., authorities said.
