DHS increases security at federal buildings over terror concerns

The Department of Homeland Security announced Tuesday it has increased security at federal buildings across the county, citing terror threats and recent attacks in Canada and elsewhere.
The announcement was made by Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, who said Federal Protective Service officers are providing the increased security.

Officials said the move was a “precautionary” step and not made in response to any specific threat. But they cited last week’s violence in Canada and Islamic State threats. Additional security will be put in place in Washington, other major U.S. cities and unnamed locations across the country.

“The reasons for this action are self-evident: the continued public calls by terrorist organizations for attacks on the homeland and elsewhere, including against law enforcement and other government officials, and the acts of violence targeted at government personnel and installations in Canada and elsewhere recently,” Johnson said in a statement. “Given world events, prudence dictates a heightened vigilance in the protection of U.S. government installations and our personnel.”

FAA Approves Drones for TV and Filmmakers

Are unmanned aircraft systems making movies near you?

It’s a plane. It’s a bird. It’s a drone?  Unmanned aircraft systems are coming to a theater near you—or perhaps making a movie near you. The Federal Aviation Administration recently announced it approved six exemptions for television and film production companies to operate UAS with their production work, according to Robert Mark in Aviation International News. But attorney Mark McKinnon, a partner at McKenna Long & Aldridge, said the news comes with much fanfare, but it has been widely misunderstood by the media. He dispelled the most common myths in an article on the Plane-ly Spoken blog.
  • All of Hollywood can fly drones. Nope, said McKinnon. Only the companies specializing in aerial filming that filed FAA petitions—and were granted them—have the ability. “As of right now, they essentially have a monopoly on all UAS aerial cinematography in the United States,” he said.
  • Interns will be piloting UAS. Nope, unless they have a pilot’s license and a class three medical certificate, required by the FAA. “In addition, the exemption requires the pilot-in-command to have logged a minimum of 200 flights cycles,” and other requirements, said McKinnon.

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A Ferguson business owner is calling the protestors who descend on his city at night “terrorists” and says Homeland Security should be called in.
The anonymous caller to the Charlie Brennan show, who KMOX confirmed is a Ferguson small business owner, says the daytime protestors are fine, but that changes when the outsiders, including elected officials from outside Ferguson, arrive after dark.
“The unpeaceful protesters come out at night, trying to harm or burn our businesses down or stop the businesses,” the caller said. “And it’s time that our government called this what it is, and this is a terrorist act.”

Murrieta Mutiny: Border Patrol Will Not Obey Unlawful Orders From Homeland Security and White House

As the Department of Homeland Security and The Department of Health and Human Services scrambled to find food, medical care and shelter for up to 60,000 illegal immigrants making their way into the United States over the last several months, they came up with the idea of shipping thousands of undocumented migrants to detention centers in Murrieta, California.

Americans showed up in droves to protest the proposed drop-offs. So much so that the gatherings made national news. Swarms of Americans, many of whom hailed from foreign countries themselves, stood in the middle of the road blocking scores of buses as they attempted to reach their destinations at makeshift refugee camps set up by DHS and HHS.

Passengers taking international flights into the United States now must have their cell phones and other electronic devices pass additional inspection before boarding planes, as part of the Transportation Security Administration’s most recent strategy to protect against the threat of a new type of terror attack.
The TSA said Sunday it is requiring only some overseas airports to conduct the additional inspections. The agency also said devices that fail to power up won't be allowed on planes and that their owners might have to undergo extra screening before boarding.
