Is it a surprise 40% of small law firms don’t have a website?

By Kevin O'Keefe on February 27, 2015

Rocket Matter’s Lisa Pansini shared a nice infographic with 10 surprising stats on law firm websites. The first being that nearly 40% of all small law firms don’t have websites. More consumers of legal services start their search for attorneys using online resources. But, many law firms still don’t have a website… On the face of … Continue Reading

Are law blogs content marketing?

Law Blogs Content Marketing
This morning I read about a Cuban blogger, Yoani Sánchez, who is going tolaunch a digital newspaper. The paper will be the first independent media on the island in half a century.
Sanchez has become one of the most recognized critical voices because of her blog, which has won many international journalism awards
Yesterday I read about a St. Cloud, Minnesota blogger, who through her own research, aided the police investigation of assaults on teenage boys in the area. Twin Cities television stations have run stories this week about the bloggers work and whether a solo perpetrator was involved all of the attacks.

How many law blogs are there and where are we headed?

How many law blogs
My friend and fellow entrepreneur, Deborah McMurray (@contentpilot), asked me last week for my estimate on the number of attorney blogs today and my prediction for the coming years. McMurray was speaking to the Dallas Legal Marketing Association regarding top trends in marketing and wanted to include an update on blogs.
I thought you’d be interested in the information I shared with her.
There are a approximately 3,500 law blogs. These numbers are based upon figures from LexBlog’s LXBN Network and the ABA Journal Blog Directory.
This number is markedly below the numbers from an ABA Tech Surveywhich estimated that 10% of attorneys and 27% of law firms have law blogs. I have no idea how the survey arrived at those numbers, I found them incredible.

Paralegal Blogging: Benefiting Readers and Writers

  • A recent survey found that:

  • in-house attorneys exhibit widespread trust (84%) in blogs.
  • they read blogs authored by legal professionals or branded by other firms more often than they read blogs written by actual journalists or regular bloggers.
  • more than half of respondents said they think that a prominent blog or blog post will influence clients to hire one firm over another.
While daily blog readership dropped 10% compared to 2010, weekly and monthly readership more than made up for it, shedding new light on the quality versus quantity debate regarding blogs.

Bloggers have First Amendment protections, federal court rules

A federal appeals court ruled Friday that bloggers and the public have the same First Amendment protections as journalists when sued for defamation: If the issue is of public concern, plaintiffs have to prove negligence to win damages.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered a new trial in a defamation lawsuit brought by an Oregon bankruptcy trustee against a Montana blogger who wrote online that the court-appointed trustee criminally mishandled a bankruptcy case.
The appeals court ruled that the trustee was not a public figure, which could have invoked an even higher standard of showing the writer acted with malice, but the issue was of public concern, so the negligence standard applied.
