Two suspected Palestinian men armed with axes and knives killed four people and wounded four in a Jerusalem synagogue on Tuesday before they were shot dead by police, Israeli media said, the worst such attack in years.
A spokesman for Israel’s ambulance service told Army Radio medics were treating nine people, five of them critically wounded. Israel’s Zaka emergency response team said there were a number of fatalities at the scene.
Israeli media said four or five people had been killed.
“We are viewing this as a terrorist attack,” police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. Media reports said one of the attackers was armed with a gun.
Violence in Israel and the Palestinian Territories has surged over the past few weeks.
Five Israelis and a foreign visitor have been deliberately run over and killed or stabbed to death by Palestinians in the past month. About a dozen Palestinians have also been killed, including those accused of carrying out those attacks.
Residents trace the violence in Jerusalem back to July, when a Palestinian teenager was burned to death by Jewish assailants, an alleged revenge attack for the abduction and killing of three Jewish teens by Palestinian militants in the occupied West Bank.
The summer war in Gaza and a row over access to a Jerusalem compound sacred to Muslims and Jews alike have also been triggers for violence.

A British-born father and three American citizens were killed by Palestinian terrorists armed with axes and guns in a Jerusalem synagogue.
Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Goldberg, described as a 'pillar of the community', was born in Liverpool and held a dual British-Israeli passport.
Mr Goldberg, 68, is a grandfather who lived in Golders Green in London before moving to Israel and was a regular visitor to the synagogue.
Friend David Osborne told Jewish News: 'He was the most wonderful person you could meet, a pillar of the community. I was on my way to the synagogue when I heard screams and shots being fired, I knew instantly it was bad.'
The others killed in the attack have been named as Rabbi Moshe Twersky, Arieh Kopinsky, 43, and rabbi Calman Levine, who were all dual US-Israeli nationals. The two terrorists were shot dead after the attack by police.

On the scene on Tuesday at the "Kehilat Yaakov" synagogue in Jerusalem's western Har Nof neighborhood, where in the early morning hours two Arab terrorists stormed in during morning prayers armed with axes, guns and knives, murdering four Jews and wounding eight others including four in critical condition.
Amram Cohen, a resident of the area, described the incident, noting that three of the four victims were hacked to death with axes and knives, while the fourth was murdered by gunfire.

VIDEO: Gaza: Palestinian Rockets Unlawfully Targeted Israeli Civilians
(Jerusalem) – Palestinian armed groups in Gaza violated the laws of war during the November 2012 fighting by launching hundreds of rockets toward population centers in Israel. About 1,500 rockets were fired at Israel between November 14 and 21, the Israel Defense Forces reported. At least 800 struck Israel, including 60 that hit populated areas. The rocket attacks, including the first from Gaza to strike the Tel Aviv and Jerusalem areas, killed three Israeli civilians, wounded at least 38, several seriously, and destroyed civilian property. Rockets that fell short of their intended targets in Israel apparently killed at least two Palestinians in Gaza and wounded others, Human Rights Watch said.

Hamas threatens to fire rockets at Tel Aviv at 9pm
Rocket attacks continue unabated at multiple locations in central and southern Israel on the fifth day of Operation Protective Edge.

Rocket attacks from Gaza continued unabated Saturday, with multiple areas of southern and central Israel coming under fire. At least two people were wounded in the strikes Saturday, a day after an 80-year-old woman was pulled from the wreckage of her home in Be'er Sheva.
On Saturday night, Hamas has threatened to fire at Tel Aviv at 9pm.
At around 7pm, rocket alert sirens were sounded in Jerusalem, Beit Shemesh and the Dead Sea area, as well as in various communities near the Gaza border. Bethlehem and Hebron were hit by rockets fired from the Gaza Strip on Saturday night.

A mosque containing weapons? The mainstream media and Western government officials will almost certainly discount this as Israeli propaganda, since they all know that Islam is a religion of peace. But in reality, there is nothing unbelievable about it. We have seen mosques used to stockpile weapons in other countries in the past, and Hamas would especially want to do this, since they would then be able to use the Israeli strike against the mosque to defame Israel as indiscriminately hitting civilian targets.

Israelis across the country have gathered in protest in the wake of the vicious murders of Eyal Yifrach, Gilad Shaar and Naftali Frenkel. The bodies of the three kidnapped teens by Hamas terrorists were discovered half buried in a pit in a field near Hebron on Monday.
The three youth were buried Tuesday afternoon side by side in Modiin. The funerals were attended by thousands of people who came to pay their last respects to the three boys who united a nation. Top governmental officials joined the grieving families in saying goodbye to the “sons of the whole nation,” as outgoing Israeli President Shimon Peres stated.
