Time is running out to get post-war reconstruction going in Gaza, which needs not only cement and bricks but also fundamental political change, the EU's representative said during a visit to the enclave on Wednesday.

Speaking at the opening of an exhibition of photographs taken during the July-August war, John Gatt-Rutter said he was painfully aware how much needed to be done to speed up the delivery of aid to Gaza's 1.8 million people.

"A long time has gone by without enough cement or enough materials coming in that will allow people to rebuild their houses," said the EU representative to the West Bank and Gaza.


"We do not have the luxury of waiting infinitely... There is a real need to move urgently and diplomatically and politically to try to work something out."


The critical problem is moving sufficient cement, building equipment, bricks, iron and steel from Israel into Gaza.


Israel is concerned that, without sufficient oversight of goods moving into Gaza, material that can be used to rebuild tunnels into Israel or has another "dual-use" will fall into the hands of Hamas militants.


Another obstacle is the failure so far of Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, led by President Mahmoud Abbas and based in the West Bank, to overcome their differences.

Hamas carried out a deadly purge of suspected informants in Gaza, killing as many as 18 people suspected of providing information to the Israel Defense Forces as fighting flared anew following the collapse of Egyptian-brokered cease-fire talks.

Masked gunmen killed seven suspected informants for Israel near a Gaza City mosque as worshippers were ending midday prayers on Friday, according to a witness and Hamas media. Earlier in the day, Hamas killed 11 men by firing squad in Gaza City's police headquarters, according to the Hamas-run Al Rai website.

Two of those killed were women, according to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, which called for an immediate halt to what it said were "extra-judicial executions.

Israeli Communications Minister Gilad Erdan, a member of the Security Cabinet, told Army Radio on Thursday that the resumption of Hamas rocket fire had brought Israel closer than ever to a decision to fully reconquer the Gaza Strip.

Erdan said that Hamas decided to break the tenuous ceasefire on Tuesday because Israel refused to meet a single one of the terrorists’ primary demands during talks in Cairo.

Over the past 24 hours, Hamas and allied terror groups have fired dozens of missiles into southern and central Israel, causing widespread damage and at least one injury.

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies, the umbrella organization that leads that country's Jewish community, has announced that it is filing charges at the South African Human Rights Commission against trade union leader Tony Ehrenreich for an anti-Israel Facebook post that called for attacks against Jews in retaliation for the death of Palestinians in Gaza--"an Eye for an Eye against Zionist aggression," in his words.

Ehrenreich, who leads the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in the Western Cape province, and who is also a local leader of the country's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), had called for attacks against Jews "everywhere" in apost on his personal Facebook page Wednesday. Reached by Breitbart News, Ehrenreichsaid that he wanted to "imprison" local Jewish leaders "and charge them with war crimes."

The union leader apparently believes that Jewish leaders are "complicit in the murder of the people in Gaza" through their "funding of the Isreali Army" [sic] and "getting SA youth to join the killings in Gaza." The Board of Deputies called both claims "baseless,"according to South African news website News24, and alleges that Ehrenreich has engaged in "flagrant" hate speech and incitement, both of which are constitutionally

Long before the recent Gaza War between the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas and Israel, groups such as Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) organized anti-Israel rallies and Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) campaigns against the Jewish State. These so called “justice seekers” have not seen fit to rally for the oppressed Tibetans, who have not resorted to terrorism in spite of the brutal Chinese occupation, nor have they demanded a state for the stateless Kurds. Why focus only on justice for Palestinians on one hand, and single out the Jews of Israel on the other? Answer – SJP is not only hypocritical, but anti-Semitic as well.

Similarly, recent violent demonstrations and rallies in support of Hamas in major European capitals reveal sheer hypocrisy. Again, only Palestinians are “victims” and only the “Jews” are the victimizers. No one cares in these mob gatherings that Hamas started this latest war (called by Israel Protective Edge Campaign), and that Hamas alone is using civilians as “human shields” with the clear intention to bring about maximum civilian casualties among Palestinians in order to elicit sympathy and win the public relations war.

As Operation Protective Edge was winding down, I was invited along with a group of journalists to visit the Kerem Shalom border crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip. There, hundreds of trucks carrying humanitarian goods were being transferred into the Strip – a scene repeated every day during the war, as it is throughout the year – containing hundreds of thousands of tons of food, medical supplies and other basic staples.

With some 2,000 people killed, thousands more wounded, and hundreds of thousands displaced, Israel was affording some much needed relief to Gazans, who undeniably suffered greatly during the conflict.

While widespread criticism has been directed at the Israeli government over said death toll, the Jewish state’s concern for the wellbeing of civilians was apparent when visiting Kerem Shalom – which, perhaps not by coincidence, translates into “vineyard of peace.”
