A Chicago Police probationary officer on his first day on the job Sunday helped save a man’s life.

Probationary Officer Nicholas Picicci and Field Training Officer Robert Cavaiani responded to the 3100 block of North Marmora at 8:20 a.m., according to a news release from Chicago Police.

The officers found a 62-year-old man inside his home having a medical emergency, police said. He was unresponsive and not breathing.

A Cook County judge on Monday found a Chicago police officer not guilty on charges he fatally shot an unarmed woman, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

In an unusual move, Judge Dennis Porter granted a defense motion for a directed verdict, meaning he found police officer Dante Servin not guilty without Servin even having to put on a defense.

Servin had been charged with reckless conduct and reckless discharge of a firearm — but Porter, in issuing his verdict, said Servin's conduct was “beyond reckless” and therefore, “it would be improper to allow the trial to continue given the total failure” to prove recklessness. “The evidence does not support the charges on which the defendant is being tried.”

The officer's decision to discharge his firearm, Porter said, “was an intentional act.”

Porter seemed to know his decision would be controversial.

“This is not a place for emotion,” he said before reading his verdict. “This is a place for reasoned decisions.”

Even so, as soon as the verdict, the courtroom exploded.

“You want me to be quiet?” someone yelled, before he referred to Servin as a m—– f—– and was led away.

Servin was an off-duty Chicago Police detective in March 2012 when he fatally shot 22-year-old Rekia Boyd and injured her friend Antonio Cross after confronting them and two others about the raucous gathering by his home near Douglas Park.

A lawsuit was filed Thursday — the first of its kind — stemming from allegations of illegal detention and other abuses by the Chicago Police Department made in the British newspaper The Guardian, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

The federal lawsuit, filed on behalf of John Vergara, Carlos Ruiz and Jose Garcia, alleges that in September 2011, the three men were arrested while in a Humboldt Park coffee shop by armed and masked police officers.

"Didn't even get a chance to drink my coffee and now I'm being handcuffed and taken out the back door of the restaurant to an alley by men with guns and ski masks and I have absolutely no idea why," Vergara said.

The three officers, the suit alleges, never told the men why they were arrested before they were taken to the Homan Square police facility on the West Side, where they were handcuffed to a bar in a cell wall for eight or nine hours.

"It's something that shouldn't be happening in the city of Chicago to anybody," said Garcia.

#BREAKING #POLICE UNION WANTS KILLING #COPS TREATED AS #HATE CRIME

With over 300,000 members, the National Fraternal Order of Police wants crimes against police officers to fall under the Congressional hate crimes statute. The move comes in the wake of the brutal murders of two New York City police officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu.

The group sent a letter to the White House and Congress asking for the change.

“Right now, it’s a hate crime if you attack someone solely because of the color of their skin, but it ought to be a hate crime if you attack someone solely because of the color of their uniform as well,” said Jim Pasco, the executive director of the National Fraternal Order of Police.

“Enough is enough! It’s time for Congress to do something to protect the men and women who protect us,” Chuck Canterbury, the president of the union, said in a statement Monday. The group has long lobbied for harsher punishment for those who harm law enforcement officers.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. –  Police are searching for a man who fired shots at two San Francisco Bay Area officers.

KNTV reports that the South San Francisco police officers returned fire about 3 a.m. Thursday in a neighborhood. The officers weren't injured.

It wasn't immediately clear if the suspect was shot, and police were searching for him hours later in the neighborhood. Officials advised residents to stay inside.

The shooting comes amid heightened tensions nationwide over attacks on police elsewhere in the country after the killings of unarmed black men by white officers in Missouri and New York.

#TCOT #Chicago Blue Ribbons Showing Up on Street Poles In Support of #Police

MOUNT GREENWOOD — Patricia Gilboy-Mueller of Mount Greenwood simply wanted to show support for the Chicago Police Department when she placed blue ribbons on the street poles and trees on her block.

A couple days later she, her daughter and a neighbor lined the commercial district on 111th Street with the blue ribbons. Car horns honked and people waved on Tuesday as their effort seemed to touch a nerve in the community populated by a significant number of police, firefighters, teachers and other city workers.

The Blue Ribbon Walk was born from this modest display of support. The march in appreciation for police officers in Chicago and nationwide steps off at 1 p.m. on Saturday from the northwest corner of 111th Street and Kedzie Avenue.

The walk concludes at the Mount Greenwood Community Church at 3509 W. 111th St. Pastor Bill Crowder will give a blessing to all officers. Hot chocolate and cookies will also be available.

"I respect what they [police] do," Gilboy-Mueller said.

'Blue' rallies show support for law enforcement across U.S.

(USA Today) As thousands of law enforcement officers and civilians alike gathered Saturday to pay their final respects to one of two New York officers gunned down as they sat in their patrol car, scores of people joined in solidarity at pro-police rallies across the country.

The rallies were planned to show support for police in the wake of several high-profile police shootings of unarmed civilians, including Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., and Eric Garner in New York, and the Dec. 20 killings of New York officers Rafael Ramos and Wejian Liu.

Ramos’ funeral coincided with the planned rallies, many of which were started through social media using the Twitter hashtag #BlueLivesMatter. Funeral services were also held Saturday for a police officer killed in the line of duty Dec. 21 in Tarpon Springs, Fla.

Similar events were held or planned in cities such as Atlantic City, Houston and Cleveland on Saturday.

#Chicago Police blasts "Sweet Home Alabama" during protest, Madison/Pulaski #PJNET #TCOT

Madison and Pulaski WAS one of the Nicest Shopping Districts in Chicago in the 1940's and 50's.

My Parents used to go down there at least once a week, and always took me with them.

We could park behind Kresgees and walk through the store to get to Madison St.

The Marboro Theatre, one of the GREAT CHICAO MOVIE HOUSES was only a block away at Madison and Keeler.

Starting in the early sixties, as the area changed, folks began to get mugged so the area died as a shopping area.  This vital economic area never came back.

BTW - many of the stores can now be found in the INDOOR HARLEM/IRVING Shopping plaza.

The Gang, Drug addicts and Crime has ruled the area since the 1968 Riot insanity so they get what they deserve.
