What is Queer Jihad?Queer Jihad is the queer Muslim struggle for acceptance: first, the struggle to accept ourselves as being exactly the way Allah has created us to be; and secondly, the struggle for understanding among Muslims in general. 'Jihad' is a misunderstood word: it means to struggle, to endeavor. Traditionally, the first and most important jihad is the struggle with one's self, one's nafs, one's selfish desires, the struggle to do good, to be good, to put into practice the beliefs and values we claim to possess. 'Queer jihad' is our own struggle with sexuality, with accepting it and dealing with it, and moving on, but it is also an endeavor to provide knowledge and foster understanding within the larger community. Queer Jihad is not a formal organisation: it's an idea. We have no mosques; we are not a movement; we request no donations, neither do we accept them. We are not funded by any government or organisation. We are interested in the spiritual lives of gay and lesbian Muslims, and other queer Muslims. We are interested in encouraging queer people to remain true to their  Creator, to grapple with the issues, to come to terms with who they are in whatever manner and fashion they are capable of doing so. The issue of Islam and homosexuality is complicated and there are no easy answers. If we can begin to talk about ourselves and share our experiences and ways of coping, we will have made a start in the right direction.

#PJNET #OBAMA OUT OF TOUCH ON #RACE RELATIONS IN #AMERICA

Barack Obama thinks that, in terms of “day-to-day interactions,” America is “less racially divided” than it was six years ago when he took office; however, that’s not the case according to recent polling.

In fact, a majority, 53 percent of Americans think race relations have gotten worse under Obama. Thirty-six percent believe they’ve stayed the same, while 9 percent feel they’ve improved, according to Bloomberg Politics.

Another poll released by CNN/ORC earlier this week found that 57 percent of white Americans believe few police officers, if any, treat black people differently, while only a quarter of nonwhite respondents held the same view.

The NPR interview took place Dec. 18, a day after People magazine published remarks by the president and first lady Michelle Obama saying that they themselves had experienced racial prejudice.

At the same time, it often seems that both Barack and Michelle Obama spend a fair amount of time highlighting racial issues from their past, despite having lived in the White House for six years.

HOORAY! Australia’s most senior Islamic State leader, Mohammad Ali Baryalei, reportedly has been killed

AUTHORITIES are trying to confirm reports that Australia’s most senior Islamic State leader, Mohammad Ali Baryalei, has been killed. The fugitive Australian terrorist and ISIS recruiter, who allegedly masterminded a foiled plot to kill a random member of the public in Sydney, was believed to be in Syria.

The Australian  (h/t Eric M) Reports of the death emerged as the Senate overwhelmingly endorsed new criminal sanctions against Australian terrorists, giving authorities the power to arrest and charge suspects who travel to conflict zones.

Abdul Salam Mahmoud, an activist from Street Dawah Australia purportedly in Syria, last night wrote on Facebook that Baryalei had been “martyred”.

The Government Wants To Censor #SocialMedia By Studying ‘Social Pollution’ On Twitter

Months after the Federal Communications Commission was forced to withdraw a newsroom study many viewed as an attempt to censor the media, the government is making a second attempt by studying “social pollution” on Twitter, and engaging in a free-speech analysis one FCC commissioner described as “straight out of a George Orwell novel.”

The National Science Foundation — the federal agency charged with promoting science, advancing welfare and securing national defense — is funding said study by researchers at Indiana University, who will mine Twitter data and categorize users’ politically related tweets into convenient government definitions of “social pollution,” “social epidemics” and “misinformation.”

Two of those same researchers, Filippo Menczer and Alessandro Flammini, co-authored a paper in 2012 examining social media use during the 2010 midterm election, which focused on “right-leaning Twitter users” who exhibited “greater levels of political activity, a more tightly interconnected social structure, and a communication network topology that facilitates the rapid and broad dissemination of political information.
