Who is Abusing Power: Rick Perry or Michael McCrum, His Special Prosecutor?

Texas CapitolTexas Governor Rick Perry was indicted on August 15, 2014, by a Travis County grand jury under the direction of an appointed special prosecutor: San Antonio attorney and former federal prosecutor who is now active as a criminal defense attorney, Michael McCrum. At issue is whether Texas Governor Rick Perry broke state law when he threatened to withhold funding, and then did withhold funding, from the Travis County District Attorney’s Office unless the head of that office, Rosemary Lehmberg, who had been arrested and pleaded guilty to a DWI, resigned. She refused, so Perry vetoed the appropriations for the Public Integrity Unit of the office.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry isn't exactly camera-shy. But few would argue that he was happy to pose for his most recent photograph.
Perry had his mug shot snapped on Tuesday at Travis County Court in Austin, having been indicted Friday on felony charges for allegedly abusing his authority as governor, and strong-arming a public official.

Texas Border Town Might Have To Dip Into Reserves To Pay For Surge Of Immigrants

Chuck Ross
Reporter

Officials in a Texas border town are calling on the federal government to compensate the city for money it spent to help manage a surge of illegal immigrants that were apprehended at the border and released.
McAllen officials say the city has spent $68,000 over the past two weeks to deal with the influx of immigrants, most of whom are coming from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
“We set up a special account to capture the costs associated with this unbudgeted item,” McAllen city attorney Kevin Pagan told the McAllen Monitor.
After U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents apprehend the immigrants, many of whom are minors without parents, they are given notices to appear in court for deportation proceedings and released into the city.

Texas judge sentences rapist to work at a rape crisis center without consulting the rape crisis center

"We all read it [the sentence] and we're like, wait a minute," said the director of the Dallas rape crisis center

A Texas judge has received sharp criticism after sentencing a rapist to community service hours at a rape crisis center without first consulting the rape crisis center. District Judge Jeanie Howard has been asked by the Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center to change the sentence, since the center does not consider having a convicted rapist as part of its volunteer staff to be in the best interest of the survivors it serves. (Which seems obvious, but the criminal justice system has a pretty terrible record when it comes to centering the experiences of survivors in sexual assault cases.)
Last week, Howard sentenced the 20 year old perpetrator — who was 18 when he raped a 14-year-old classmate — to 45 days in jail and 250 community service hours at the center.
Bobbie Villareal, executive director of the Dallas Area Rape Crisis Center, was shocked by the news, reports the Dallas Observer. “We all read it [the sentence] and we’re like, wait a minute,” he said.

This excellent video covers new developments in Internet law.

Including HB 318/SB 118 social media passwords, HB 1989 service by social media and
the lone survivor - SB 94 was passed and will become law on September 1, 2013.  It allows for private civil lawsuits against websites that allow advertisements for what the law calls “compelled prostitution,” better known as sex trafficking.
