Rare photos from ‘underground Gaza’ give glimpse of tunnel threat

"Hamas has been building underground infrastructure for years. There's an underground Gaza – this isn't a slogan, but rather the plain truth. Our units have come across it and in every day of our combat we manage to damage this infrastructure.

In general, the tunnel issue is defined in Gaza as a national flagship project. It includes three types of tunnels: The smuggling tunnels on the Philadelphi Route in Rafah, the offensive tunnels along the border fence with Israel, and the strategic tunnels inside the Gaza Strip which are meant to be used mainly for mobilizing forces between areas at times of emergency, but

The Gaza tunnel project is organized, calculated and does not leave any room for piracy. It is coordinated between all the factions' military wings and includes the registration of all the tunnels in the Strip, including the tunnels' routes, the ways to enter them and the destination according to which they are mapped.

The tunnels are divided into four districts: The northern Strip, Gaza city, the central Strip and the southern Strip. There is one person in charge of each district in coordination with the other districts, and only one person in charge of each tunnel. In order to maintain the secrecy, his name and the tunnel's route are kept confidential. The diggers and the person in charge of the district are the only ones familiar with the details.

Each military wing in the Strip is permitted to dig a tunnel only after coordinating the activity with the person in charge of the district. An average dig takes about four months. Most of the tunnels are dug by hand during the night, and each tunnel is accurately calculated.

The factions have defined every part of the Strip as eligible for a tunnel for military purposes. When a tunnel is dug near the border fence, those responsible for it notify the land owner, subject to security coordination, and stress the structural separation:

IDF paratroopers uncovers eight rodent tunnels during Gaza ground operation

IDF soldiers from the Paratrooper Brigade uncovered 8 shafts leading to smuggling tunnels during Friday morning skirmishes in the Gaza Strip. The find aligns with the government declaration that the IDF's main targets in their ground incursion would be tunnels in use by Hamas.

The troops apparently uncovered the tunnels in coordination with intelligence efforts and found a cache of weapons being stored there.

Overnight, an IDF soldier was killed and five other soldiers sustained light to moderate wounds in separate incidents. Palestinian officials say that at least 31 Gazans have been killed since the ground operation began, including three children.

LIVE UPDATES: Operation Protective Edge, day 10

Israel launches ground offensive into Gaza Strip; Gaza militants fire rockets barrage at Israel's south, center and Coastal Plain; Hamas: 'Ground operation a dangerous, costly step, occupation will pay heavy price'

By  Jul. 18, 2014 | 1:53 AM |  22

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon ordered the Israel Defense Forces to launch a ground incursion in the Gaza Strip Thursday night, in order to "damage the underground tunnel terrors constructed in Gaza leading into Israeli territory."
Earlier, Israel resumed airstrikes on the Gaza Strip at 3:00 P.M. after a six hour temporary cease-fire to allow humanitarian aid to reach Gaza residents. The cease-fire began at 9:00 A.M. on Thursday morning, though Hamas fired rockets at Israel roughly two hours later.

Since the end of the ceasefire, over 100 rockets and mortar shells have been fired at Israel, including large barrages aimed primarily at the south, but some have also reached central Israel. Israeli airstrikes killed four Palestinian children, three in Zeitoun and one in Khan Yunis.

Censorship Appeals Petition - how you can help, from the Jewish Internet Defense Force

Facebook is Censoring and Blocking Israel Supporters: How You Can Help

If you know of any Facebook employees, or if you can help find them online via Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, etc, please consider connecting with them and sending them the following, or something like it:
Dear *******

An organization I support is currently being censored and blocked on Facebook sharing photos of the Israeli Air Force.

To read more about it, please see:  http://is.gd/fcensor

For 30 days, they cannot reach their network of over 300,000 that they built on the platform. I feel a terrible mistake has been made, as I count on their updates for news and information, especially regarding the current crisis in Israel.

Could you please help? If so, please see what you can do, and/or contact David Appletree (the founder of the JIDF) to discuss the issue directly, here:david@thejidf.org

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Your Name
Thanks to all who help and agree that this is an outrage. While we  have some Facebook contacts, we have yet to hear back from them, sadly. It's a shame Facebook has no quick appeals process, as this happens quite often to us and others. The standard reason they give is that it was some sort of automated mistake. We have spoken to several attorneys and experts in computer science who agree what we posted was not remotely against Facebook's TOS. We hate to assume the worse (that Facebook is simply censoring views they don't like, especially since they proudly support people's "right" to post hateful content, such as Holocaust Denial on the platform), but we find the timing of this to be very suspect. We're hoping to reach a human being at Facebook that can help, and that our content is restored and that this block ends soon. Thank you for your help!

Israel Under Fire: Life Comes to Halt

Incessant Hamas rocket fire is making daily life intolerable for Israeli civilians.
Most of the Israeli population is currently living under the threat of rocket fire. Life between sirens, in and out of bomb shelters, has become the daily reality for millions of Israelis.
Life under fire poses a serious threat to Israel’s civilians. On Monday, July 14, a rocket fired from Gaza hit Lakiya, located near Beer Sheva, and wounded two girls aged 11 and 13. One was seriously injured and the second was injured moderately. Earlier that day, a boy was lightly wounded from shrapnel after a rocket fired from Gaza struck Ashdod.

Businesses around the country, especially in the south, have suffered due to ongoing rocket fire. Many restaurants and shops have closed, as people prefer to be at home with their families near shelters.

Hamas called on Palestinian residents of the northern Gaza Strip to "immediately return" to their homes, after the IDF warned locals to evacuate the area at noon to avoid being harmed in any military operation.

A spokesperson for UNRWA in Gaza claimed that some 4,000 Palestinians had evacuated their homes and headed for UN facilities and shelters in the Gaza Strip.

The Hamas Interior Ministry released a statement titled "Urgent call to the residents of the Gaza Strip" in which locals were told to ignore the calls and warnings made by Israel and the IDF. "To all of our people who have evacuated their homes – return to them immediately and do not leave the house."http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4542708,00.html

The Israeli Air Force attacked rocket-launching infrastructure targets in the northern Gaza Strip. The targets in the Jabalia refugee camp. The IDF also said it targeted the operations of the commander of Islamic Jihad's rocket unit in the Beit Lahia neighborhood.

Some 36 percent of all recent rocket fire on Israel has come from the northern areas of the Gaza Strip and 30 percent of long-range rockets have been fired from the same radius. Beit Lahia has been the origin of 10% of all rocket fire in Operation Protective Edge.

"We have identified more rocket fire from the northern Strip than other sectors and this morning we are calling on the population to evacuate from there ahead of an escalation of (Israeli) attacks," the IDF said Sunday morning.

Why Israel needs to go into Gaza

Analysis: Sending in ground troops will facilitate the hunt for and disposal of hidden rocket launchers, but the soldiers need clear objectives from the political leadership.
Ron Ben-Yishai

It's almost scary to write, but so far Operation Protective Edge has been managed quite well from an Israeli perspective. Some 350 rockets of all sorts and sizes have been launched from Gaza, but so far there have been no casualties and damage to property is on a surprisingly small scale. Even so, the casualties and the destruction in Gaza and the large-scale suffering there make it difficult - even for an Israeli patriot - to feel satisfied and at ease. What is truly worrying are the twin threats hovering over our heads all the time, which must not be ignored:

Netanyahu: Hamas will pay a heavy price - MAZELTOV!!!

'IDF to continue with strikes that will exact a very heavy price from Hamas,' defense minister says as IDF spokesperson claims operation to be long.

"The army is ready for all possibilities," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday after holding a meeting of his Security Cabinet as rockets continued to rain on Israel.

"Hamas will pay a heavy price for firing toward Israeli citizens. The security of Israel's citizens comes first. The operation will expand and continue until the fire toward our towns stops and quiet returns."

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said that Operation Protective Edge is set to expand, and similar comments were made by the IDF spokesperson, indicating the IDF was still mulling a ground operation in Gaza.
