Don’t believe the hype: marijuana legalization poses too many risks to public health and public safety. Based on almost two decades of research, community-based work, and policy practice across three presidential administrations, my new book “Reefer Sanity” discusses some widely held myths about marijuana:
Myth No. 1: “Marijuana is harmless and non-addictive”
No, marijuana is not as dangerous as cocaine or heroin, but calling it harmless or non-addictive denies very clear science embraced by every major medical association that has studied the issue. Scientists now know that the average strength of today’s marijuana is some 5–6 times what it was in the 1960s and 1970s, and some strains are upwards of 1020 times stronger than in the past—especially if one extracts THC through a butane process. This increased potency has translated to more than 400,000 emergency room visits every year due to things like acute psychotic episodes and panic attacks.

Heroin Pushed on Chicago by Cartel Fueling Gang Murders

By John Lippert, Nacha Cattan & Mario Parker - Sep 16, 2013 11:01 PM CT

The two Mexican couriers were hauling a tractor-trailer full of cash: $3 million collected for drugs sold on the streets of Chicago. Juan Gonzalez and David Zuniga were driving their rig through Indiana in October 2011, transporting the money to Mexico. As they stopped to fix a flat tire, three members of the Gangster Disciples, Chicago’s biggest street gang, held them up at gunpoint.

New heroin users in the Chicago area are now more likely to be white, suburban and in their late teens or 20s, according to law enforcement officials and drug-treatment counselors.
Danny Dillon, a three-sport athlete, thought he was snorting a crushed-up pain pill the first time he tried heroin, as a high school junior.
We hear a lot about gang-related violence but still hear little abou the dealy trade in Heroin that drive it.  This is one of a series of pieces being run by Bloomber and available on the Web, bringing the awful reality of the gang/drug life to the web reader.
