TROY >> Social Media: it might be the new chocolate when it comes to cravings and, as a result, it has recently become a popular indulgence to give up for Lent.
But, unlike chocolate, social media has become a part of daily routines for many and is even part of some job descriptions. It is used to stay in touch with family, old friends, new acquaintances, and is becoming an integral platform for small businesses to directly reach their current and potential customers.
Tom Nardacci, founder and president of Troy-based Gramercy Communications, is about to go into his third week of Facebook fasting as part of the Christian season of Lent, which lasts 40 days before Easter Sunday. He said he made the decision to give up Facebook since he knew it would be hard. It was his middle school religion teacher Sister Aloise who encouraged him to give up something hard for Lent, Nardacci remembered. And, considering he has been signed up with Facebook since graduate school, he was curious about what life without daily Facebooking looked like.So far, he said: “It’s actually hard. I miss the daily connection to some friends who are also just really busy. I had to log in one time for a work thing. Other than that, Sister Aloise would be proud.”
Considering that the mass popularity of the Internet only happened a couple decades ago and that social media itself has been around for an even shorter period of time, society is still figuring out the overall role that social media will play.
