“What savage barbarian could kill 1,700 persons in cold blood?” asked Khalid al-Atbi, an Iraqi health official. “Savage”? Careful, al-Atbi, or you will tarred as a racist, bigoted “Islamophobe.” And you should know that the Islamic State was only trying to “strike terror into the hearts of the enemies of Allah” (Qur’an 8:60).

And why did the Iraqi military fold up so quickly before the Islamic State? Why was the Islamic State so well trained and well equipped that it was able to overwhelm this Shi’ite force and then murder 1,700 men in cold blood?
