If this turns out to be true, it will be a severe setback for the nascent caliphate — but with the Islamic State’s hand against everyone and everyone’s hand against it, surely not an unexpected one. Succession in the historical caliphates was often a haphazard and violent affair, and almost certainly will be in this case, if al-Baghdadi dies and his Islamic State holds together at all.
