CHICAGO (FOX News/ FOX 32 News) - Walmart is closing 269 stores, more than half of them in the U.S. and another big chunk in its challenging Brazilian market.

The stores being shuttered account for a fraction of the company's 11,000 stores worldwide and less than 1 percent of its  global revenue.

The closures will affect 16,000 workers, 10,000 of them in the U.S.

Two of the stores closing include two Walmart Express locations in Chicago:

• #3065: 3636 N Broadway St.
• #3039: 225 W Chicago Ave.

Those stores will close on Sunday, January 17. 

The announcement comes three months after its CEO Doug McMillon told investors the world's largest retailer would review its store fleet in amid increasing competition from all fronts, including from online rival Amazon.com.

According to a new report that looks at how continuing improvements to artificial intelligence and robotics will impact society, “robotic sex partners will become commonplace” by 2025. A large portion of the report also focuses on how AI and robotics will impact both blue- and white-collar workers, with about 50% of the polled experts stating that robots will displace more human jobs than they create by 2025.

The report, called “AI, Robotics, and the Future of Jobs” and published by Pew Research, is a 66-page monster [PDF]. The report basically consists of a bunch of experts waxing lyrical about what the world will look like in 2025 if robots and AI continue to advance at the same scary pace of the last few years. Almost every expert agreed that robots and AI will no longer be constrained to repetitive tasks on a production line, and will permeate “wide segments of daily life by 2025.” The experts are almost perfectly split on whether these everyday robots will be a boon or a menace to society, though — but more on that at the end of the story.

On Wednesday, Ryan Grim, Washington bureau chief for The Huffington Post, issued a press release breathlessly pumping an article that, he promised and swore, exposes plans hatched by Charles and David Koch to “foist” their “worldview on public school students.”

How do the Koch brothers propose to accomplish such foisting? In the HuffPo piece, which at about 4,800 words (not including a quiz) runs nearly 20 percent longer (and more boring) than Edgar Allen Poe’s famous short story “The Black Cat,” two daring reporters explain that the plan is to teach “predominantly poor students” at Highland Park High School in Topeka, Kan. — wait for it — “basic economic principles.”

On top of this nefarious instruction, the students then have the opportunity to receive filthy Koch lucre “including startup capital and scholarships.”

Grim eagerly points to a sample question from a quiz that is part of the Koch brothers-created material. “True or false,” the dastardly quiz question says: “Teaching people how to ‘fish’ and catch their own food is symbolic of creating opportunities for entrepreneurs so that they can create jobs for others too.”

CEOs sound off on Illinois’ business climate

CEOs of major U.S. corporations went on record in Chief Executive Magazine’s “2014 Best and Worst States for Business.” 

Business leaders pulled no punches in their description of Illinois, going so far as to compare doing business in Illinois to doing business in a third-world country.

The publication ranked Illinois at the bottom of the pile, at 48th of the 50 states. But the real highlights come from the CEO comments.

As one CEO pointed out:

“Corruption and union pensions have made Illinois a poor alternative for business. Continually avoiding to address and fix the problems have only exacerbated the situation. More conservative states are easier to work in and with.”

That comment alludes to states such as Texas, which ranked first overall, and Indiana, which ranked sixth overall.  Illinoisans are piling into Texas and Indiana, and those states embrace opportunity, growth and job creation.

A friend recently asked me to look over his cover letter for a job he really hoped to get. When I looked it over, the letter was professional and grammatically clean — and totally, utterly boring.

My friend began by introducing himself the same way everyone introduces themselves in a cover letter. He then went through his experience the same way everyone goes through their experience. In summary, his cover letter was exactly like everyone else’s.

I suggested he do something different — something interesting, so he would be memorable to the oh-so-essential person who would be responsible for making the hire. Ultimately, my friend thanked me for the suggestion, but decided to leave the letter the way it was. "I don’t think people in my industry do anything different like that," he said.

#Chicago sees Big slips in Illinois Payrolls

Illinois can grow its payrolls by embracing the reforms that are leading to job creation in pro-growth states. Sunsetting the temporary 2011 tax hike would be a good start. Illinois also needs job-saving reforms to its workers’ compensation system, ranked fourth-worst nationally, and its unemployment insurance system, ranked ninth-worst nationally.

The 20 Percenters

In one in five U.S. families, no one has a job.

Not mom. Not dad. Not grandma or grandpa. No one.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in 2013, there were nearly 81 million families in the United States. Of that number, about 16 million families reported that nobody in their household had a job. That number accounts for 20 percent of U.S. families.

BLS defines a family as “a group of two or more people who live together and who are related by birth, adoption or marriage.”
