Armed militias planning to take over US border to thwart illegal immigrants

As militias vow to protect the Texas border from illegal immigrants, Gov. Rick Perry (R-Texas) said he believes the president has an ulterior motive for not moving quickly to prevent the overwhelming numbers of immigrants crossing the border.

Between January 1 and June 15, 2014, more than 52,000 unaccompanied alien children have been apprehended after crossing the Mexican border into the US, according to Customs and Border Patrol.The children are mostly from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. Including adults, over 181,000 undocumented immigrants who are "other than Mexicans," or OTMs, have been apprehended along the southwest border in that time period. The majority of illegal aliens are coming through the Rio Grande Valley in southwest Texas.

Saudi rights lawyer sentenced to 15 years prison

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia –  A court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a prominent human rights lawyer to 15 years imprisonment and barred him from traveling for another 15 years after that on charges related to his activism.

The court in the western coastal city of Jiddah found Waleed Abul-Khair guilty of "undermining the regime and officials," ''inciting public opinion" and "insulting the judiciary." The court on Sunday also fined him 200,000 riyals ($53,000).

City scales back planned human rights ordinance

Evanston city officials have scaled back a proposed human rights ordinance that previously would have allowed the city manager to review discrimination complaints against private employers.

The amended proposal will be up for consideration at a Human Service Committee meeting Monday. The new "Evanston Human Rights Ordinance" reflects what is currently included in the Illinois Human Rights Act as well as the Cook County Human Rights Ordinance, said Mario Treto, assistant city attorney for Evanston.

Nearly two decades ago, the City Council unanimously passed an ordinance to prohibit discrimination against transgender individuals.

It defined sexual orientation as "having or perceived as having emotional, physical or sexual attachment to another without regard to the sex of that person or having or being perceived as having an orientation for such attachment, or having or being perceived as having a self-image or identity not traditionally associated with one's biological maleness or femaleness."

Chimpanzee personhood effort fails first legal tests in New York

(CNN) -- Three New York courts have rejected one group's legal effort to grant captive chimpanzees in that state the same rights as a "legal person."

The Nonhuman Rights Project filed three separate suits on behalf of four chimpanzees in New York state last week in a bid to secure for Tommy, Kiko, Hercules and Leo -- all male chimps held in various parts of the state -- the "right to bodily liberty."

Course Description

currently lacking capacity to adequately deal with security concerns, to adopt a growth-
and freedom-oriented, participative, bottom-up perspective on security that has human rights

Course Structure

The first part of the course will provide an overview of the current state of international and
regional human rights regimes and their efforts to protect freedom rights while also ensuring
private security.

The second part will then go into the evolution of human rights, their violations and protection
mechanism in era of the internet.

Week 1: An introduction to public privacy, cyber security and human rights

Week 2: Yours and the rights of others: civic and social human rights

Week 3: Human rights cyber regime

Week 4: Agencies for the human rights cyber space

Week 5: Security, human rights and privacy assurance through Internet

Week 6: E-democracy and social networks

Week 7: Public versus State Sovereignty

Week 8: Public Privacy, internet freedom and state responsibility.

Course Format

The course will be hosted online and will consist of lectures by the instructor, as well as guest
lectures and exclusive interviews with respective stakeholders. Additional reading material,
animations and images will support each learning objective. Students will be assessed through
quizzes, peer-to-peer review and their participation in interactive discussion forums.
