For Modern Societies To Survive, Lawful Citizens Must Be Armed

Off-duty Israeli soldiers still carry their weapons due to the ever-present threat of Islamic terrorism and war.
Despite the images of soldiers that carry their firearms off duty, Israel is a land where gun control is relatively tight. You must meet a set of rigid criteria to own a firearm, the firearms you may own are limited in number and type, the amount of ammunition you may own is limited to a single 50-round box, and permits must be renewed every three years.
At least, those were the previous conditions. A recent outbreak of Islamic terror attacks has forced the Israeli government to reconsider their position on gun control, and theyhave now made it much easier for law abiding citizens to acquire firearms for self-defense. They may even include automatic weapons on a case-by-case basis.
In Russia, street crime (and to a much lesser extent, the threat of Islamic terrorism) has become so bad that this oppressive nation is also now allowing citizens to arm themselves.
Russian gun right supporters point to the United States as a model of how things should be.

Pro-gun ownership campaigners however point to US statistics as proof that ownership of firearms could keep them safer.

An elderly North Carolina man opened fire on three assailants who forced their way into his home, robbed the family, tried to rape his granddaughter and stole his car, reports the Fayetteville Observer.

Kenneth Byrd, 67, was at home in Lumberton, N.C., when a man came to the door and said he was having car trouble and needed water.

Byrd invited the man inside and was then  rushed by two other assailants wearing black clothes and ski masks.

The home invaders — all three brandishing handguns — corralled Byrd, his wife Judy, 65, and their 19-year-old granddaughter into the back of the home and demanded the couple open their safe.

When the men tried to rape the couple’s granddaughter, Byrd grabbed a gun and exchanged shots with the assailants, Sheriff Kenneth Sealey said in a news release.

An 86-year-old Illinois man with a concealed carry permit fired his weapon at an armed robbery suspect fleeing police last month, stopping the man in his tracks and allowing the police to make an arrest.

Law enforcement authorities described the man as “a model citizen” who “helped others avoid being victims” at an AT&T store outside Chicago where he witnessed the holdup. The man, whose identity was withheld from the press, prevented others from entering the store during the theft.

Concealed Carry – Are You Making These Five Mistakes? -

A group of proud gun owners is filing suit against Ohio State University, claiming that the school’s code of conduct violates state law by prohibiting students from keeping guns in their vehicles and wearing them while representing the school in off-campus events. The Students for Concealed Carry Foundation say that the school’s code comes into conflict with state law that permits exceptions to university gun bans. These exceptions include carrying a gun in a locked car, an exemption not recognized by OSU’s policy.

While we wish the group good luck with their lawsuit, this seemed like a perfect opportunity to talk about concealed carry in general. Unfortunately, a small minority of handgun owners make things more difficult for the rest of us by making serious errors in judgment when exercising their concealed-carry privilege. Here are five mistakes to watch out for.

#1 – A lack of training
Owning a handgun and carrying a license isn’t enough. In many states, the bar to get your concealed weapons permit is set fairly low. This is probably as it should be, but that only puts the impetus on the owner himself. Do yourself a favor and get properly trained on your firearm. It could mean the difference if you ever find yourself in a position to use it.

Illinois' concealed carry law is here to stay

The letter from Meghan Sheehan on June shows just how truly uninformed the public is about Illinois’ concealed carry law.

First, the law was enacted almost a year ago by the Illinois General Assembly; there is no “appeal.” Concealed carry is the law in Illinois, as it was in 49 other states before us.

Second, the Illinois concealed carry law has nothing to do with access to guns. It does not make it easier or harder to acquire a firearm; the law is all about allowing law-abiding citizens who meet the background requirements, training and live fire qualification to obtain a permit to carry a concealed firearm. 

Third, police officers do not use firearms to enforce the law. The job of the police is to investigate crimes and arrest those who break the law. Police have firearms to protect themselves, not to protect the public. The police do not “rule” over the citizens. They are merely empowered to enforce laws, not have power over us. 

This is the same argument used before in all the other states when they passed their concealed carry laws, but the predicted “return to the Wild West” and the streets running red with blood from all the shootings did not happen in the other 49 states with their laws, and it hasn’t happened here in Illinois either. Are Illinois citizens somehow less in control of their emotions than the rest of the U.S.? I don’t think so.

Detroit police chief: Armed citizens can make city safer

Detroit's police chief is sticking to his guns after being criticized for supporting citizens to arm themselves.

Police Chief James Craig responded Thursday to a Detroit resident who challenged his pro-gun stance. Mr. Craig made national news earlier this month after he said armed citizens could serve as a deterrent to criminals, The Detroit News reported.
