The Short, Unhappy Life of a Republican Attack Line, and Its Angry Aftermath
Early last week, a media firestorm unexpectedly broke out about a government report that, according to Republicans, proved that the Affordable Care Act (also known as the ACA—or, to Republicans, the dreaded “Obamacare”) would “kill” millions of jobs. By the end of the week, however, that right-wing talking point had been exposed for its gross dishonesty.
The story had, in fact, been exposed so completely that, before the week ended, the Republicans’ contorted attacks had already become a laugh line on the late-night comedy shows. Republicans Need to Understand That It Is Possible to Negotiate Without Taking Hostages
In my most recent column here on Verdict, I asked whether there is anything that the most extreme conservatives who are currently running the Republican Party could do that would finally convince the slightly-less extreme conservatives to leave the party. There is, after all, plenty of room for genuine conservative views in the Democratic Party, notwithstanding media tropes that continue to paint Barack Obama’s center-right agenda as “liberal.”
