As the world continued to search for answers over the downing of Flight MH17, the internet came alive with conspiracy theories today.

The Web has long been a haven for numerologists and conspiracy crackpots peddling their alternative analyses of events that shake the world.

And today was no different as web sleuths across the globe rushed online in a bid to hypothesize over what really happened to the doomed Malaysian Airlines passenger plane . . .

Was whoever shot down MH17 actually trying to assassinate Vladimir Putin?

Russia Today sparked a fever of speculation last night after publishing a report that claimed the doomed flight was flying almost the exact same path as Putin's presidential plane did less than 40 minutes later.

It quoted a source as telling Interfax news agency: 'I can say that Putin’s plane and the Malaysian Boeing intersected at the same point and the same echelon.

‘SMOKING GUN’ INTERCEPTS IN THE MH17 SHOOTDOWN

The Ukrainian security agency has released tapes of what it claims are intercepted phone conversation between separatists and Russian military officers that clearly place blame for the destruction of Flight MH17 on the separatists.  Verifying the authenticity of these tapes is urgent business.  It obviously isn’t difficult to fake something like this, and the Ukrainian government has strong incentives to point fingers of blame at the separatists and their Russian patrons, just as the separatists and Russians want to blame the Ukrainians.

Having said that, I get the sense from this morning’s media reports that intelligence analysts are leaning toward accepting these tapes as genuine.  The American intelligence community seems highly confident that the murder weapon was a surface-to-air missile – Vice President Joe Biden said as much yesterday, declaring that the plane had been “blown out of the sky.”  There’s plenty of evidence that the separatists were provided with such weapons by the Russians, and have been using them against Ukrainian air targets.  On Friday morning, the Ukrainians claimed they were monitoring Buk missile systems scooting away from rebel positions and heading back into Russia, the geo-strategic equivalent of a killer throwing his gun into a river.

President Barack Obama provoked fury in the U.S. on Thursday by casually devoting less than a minute to the deaths of 295 people aboard a Malaysian airliner, as he began an often jokey 16-minute speech about the need to expand America’s transportation infrastructure.

There are no confirmed American dead, an earlier Reuters report claimed that it was feared that as many as 23 U.S. citizens had perished.

Obama declared in Wilmington, Delaware that 'it looks like it may be a terrible tragedy,' but not before enthusiastically declaring that 'it is wonderful to be back in Delaware.'

VIDEO: Rebel Leader in Leaked Audio: 'Cossacks' Shot Down the Plane

KIEV, Ukraine — A YouTube video surfaced Thursday that Ukrainian security officials say includes a phone call between a pro-Russian rebel leader and a Russian intelligence agent discussing the shoot-down of a plane.

The beginning of the audio is reportedly between Igor Bezler, a pro-Russian rebel leader, and Vasili Geranin, a man Ukraine security officials say is a Russian intelligence agent. In the first line, Bezler allegedly says "We have just shot down a plane." (This line can also be translated to "We have seen a plane shot down," but then both translations says "cossacks" —Russian volunteers—from Chernukhino road block shot it down.)

The second half of the audio is between two unidentified men, named "Greek" and "Major."

Best lead yet? Satellite spots possible debris field in search for Flight 370

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN) -- New satellite images provided by a French defense firm show 122 objects floating in the southern Indian Ocean, not far from other satellite sightings that could be related to missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, the Malaysian transport minister said Wednesday.

When photographed by the satellite on Sunday, the objects were scattered over 154 square miles (400 square kilometers), acting Transportation Minister Hishammuddin Bin Hussein said. That's about the size of Denver, Colorado.

The location recorded by the satellite was within the search area scoured Wednesday by a dozen aircraft from six nations, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said. Nothing was found, the agency said on Twitter.
