A woman and eight males including a 16-year-old boy were wounded in a gang-related shooting Monday night at a CTA bus turnaround near a Southwest Side Catholic high school.
At 9:14 a.m., nine people were shot while standing at a CTA bus terminal at 7900 S. Western Avenue, according to a police News Affairs release, which said the shooting was gang-related.
A large group of people were standing in the area when multiple gunman opened fire, a Wentworth Area police sergeant said. The number of gunmen are believed to be no more than five.
Many of the people in the group fled, but a 20-year-old woman was shot in the leg and eight males, between 16 and 30 years old, were also shot -- some of them multiple times, the sergeant said. None of the victims were on a bus.
Some of the people shot were intended targets with gang affiliations, according to the sergeant said who said all the wounded are expected to survive.
Shortly after the incident, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said that nine people were wounded -- three critically.
Two people were taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, one person was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and six were taken in good-to-fair condition to Christ Medical Center, Mount Sinai Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital, Rosado said.
