14 ways to gain attention for your law blog

 in Blogging, Marketing Your Blog

14 ways to gain attention for law blog
I was recently asked by a marketing director in a large firm for ideas on how one of their practice groups could increase the visibility of their blog. The lawyers in the group wanted to take their blog to the next level.
I have a number of ideas, but fortunately for me (and the lawyers), Jacquelyn Smith (@JacquelynVSmith), Careers Editor at Business Insider, offers “14 Ways to Get Your Blog Real Attention” in an excellent piece at Forbes.
Each of the ways discussed are applicable to law blogs. Here they are with a little annotating on my part.
1. Determine the purpose of your blog and stick with it.
Stay on topic and be relevant. Don’t just summarize legal developments, offer insight and commentary of value which your audience could not find elsewhere. Remain aware that you started a blog to build relationships and word of mouth with a target audience so as to grow business. The goal was not traffic and visibility.

Blogging in parallel in Facebook

Blogging in parallel in Facebook

Facebook law blog
With the volume of people using Facebook and Facebook driving networking socially and business-wise, lawyers need to explore “blogging in Facebook.”
I’m not referring to sharing one of your blog posts on Facebook, I am referring to posting in Facebook the type of piece you’d post on your blog, though a bit shorter.
Management consultant and author, Euan Semple (@euan), calls this blogging in parallel with Facebook.
I now get the sort of interactions in Facebook around posts that I used to get blogging. In fact I now see myself as blogging in parallel in Facebook. In the early days of blogging we would reach out to people who looked interesting and said smart things. I am now doing that in Facebook.

Authentic legal blogging builds relationships By Kev

 in Blogging

authentic legal blogging
Miraz Jordan (@miraz), a freelance technology writer from New Zealand, had witnessed the world where bloggers were concerned with catchy headlines and web traffic. It was not until she was asked to do a piece on the New Zealand Presbyterian Church’s use of blogging that she discovered authentic blogging.
The bloggers Jordan interviewed for her blog article had far different concerns. Though not religious herself, Jordan was struck by each speaking of blogging in the sense of relationships, community and authenticity.
When we communicate with genuineness and authenticity we build relationships and strengthen our community. We humans can’t seem to help but communicate, by any means available to us.
One popular way is to write a blog.

Network OnLine

Don’t just improve your content, use content to network online

Rather than trying to produce “better content,” law firms and other professionals ought to look at content marketing as an opportunity to network online.
Author and president of the consulting firm ChangeLabs, Peter Sheahan (@PeterGSheahan) has a good piece in the Harvard Business Review onwhat it takes for success in content content marketing.
The only route to sustainable success in content marketing is through helping customers navigate the crazy, pressured, opportunity-filled world we live in now.

How to get more people to share your law blog posts

8188824613_037d664dc0_z

  1. 8188824613_037d664dc0_z
Getting more people to share your law blog posts requires you to share other people’s posts and stories.
Post at the right times – Monday and Thursday at 9:30 ET.
  2. Have social sharing buttons and an email subscribe.
  3. Have a called out “tweetable quote” that will auto-tweet an excerpt.
  4. Strong imagery.
  5. Include a strong call to action (CTA), ie, download this ebook.
They’re okay, but the list misses by far and away the most important one for blogging lawyers. That’s sharing other’s content

Facebook just can’t win. When they share data with the government, people get mad—and when they don’t, or have reservations, people get mad too. Travis Crabtree has an interesting post on this matter today. All, be sure to check out Dan Schwartz’s post as well. Total posts on the LexBlog Network today: 160.

Law blog success targeting just one person

Law blog post target audience
I was recently explaining to a group of lawyers and law firm professionals that traffic doesn’t matter when it comes to blog posts.
One of the firm’s professionals stopped me and asked “Why are marketing experts advising the firm that blog success ought to be measured by web traffic.” I explained that it may be just me, but a successful blog post can reach one person. Just one, not even two.
How so?

Paul’s Perspective: If You Don’t Know How It Works, Teach Yourself How It Works…

I’m not sure I’m willing to call 2013 The Year of the Law Firm Video but I am certain that we saw many great examples of lawyers and law firms testing out the medium in the past twelve months. Video does very well on JD Supra, too, and so we know there’s a growing audience appetite for legal analysis, commentary, and guidance in this exciting digital format.
