We're working on coming up with a list for next week's Free Tech Tools for Legal Aid and I wanted to hear from you all about what you use.  I'll be fleshing this out more on Monday, but I would love to get your feedback on your favorite tools that are free (or very low cost).  All of these are linked in http://lsntap.org/50techtips , but just wanted to start the conversation:

Web Sites/Services
  1. TechSoup - Resources and content aimed at non-profits
  2. Wiki - Use a wiki to easily capture program knowledge
    • Pika Software - low-cost wiki hosting for the poverty law community (use MediaWiki)
  3. TaDa Lists - simple, shareable, free online "to do" lists. Part of the Basecamp project management suite.
  4. BackFlip - save and share important things you see on the Web. Backflip also has organization and search functions and other nifty tools.
  5. Open Directory Project - The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors.

ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES

Effective July 1, 2013, the Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) will handle all reports of alleged abuse against persons with disabilities aged 18-59 who live in domestic (non-institutional) settings. Pursuant to Public Act 98-0049, this responsibility transferred to IDoA from the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) Office of the Inspector General. In addition, IDoA continues to respond to reports of alleged abuse, neglect or financial exploitation of persons 60 years of age and older living in the community.
To report suspected abuse, neglect or financial exploitation, please call the statewide 24-hour Adult Protective Services Hotline (formerly the Elder Abuse Hotline) at 1-866-800-1409, 1-888-206-1327 (TTY).

Illinois Department of Aging Legal Services

The Department’s Legal Services Developer, an attorney, provides legal advice to the Adult Protective Services and Ombudsman Provider Agencies. The Area Agencies on Aging fund local legal services for older people, and the Legal Services Developer oversees the program and provides technical assistance upon request.

The senior legal assistance provider offices, of which there are 21 around the state, provide legal services to Illinoisans 60 years of age or older. Legal assistance providers advocate for and represent older clients in civil cases – particularly those involving...
  • elder abuse and neglect,
  • financial exploitation,
  • consumer fraud,
  • landlord-tenant relationships,
  • nursing home residents’ rights, and
  • conflicts over benefit programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Social security and pensions.
They also...
  • help with simple estate planning, living wills, and powers of attorney,
  • perform research and
  • conduct educational programs regarding legal rights on a wide variety of legal issues.
Each provider serves a specific geographical area, usually several counties.
