A Cambridge Professor has made the astonishing claim that three scientists investigating the melting of Arctic ice may have been assassinated within the space of a few months.

Professor Peter Wadhams said he feared being labelled a “looney” over his suspicion that the deaths of the scientists were more than just an ‘extraordinary’ coincidence.

But he insisted the trio could have been murdered and hinted that the oil industry or else sinister government forces might be implicated.

The three scientists he identified – Seymour Laxon and Katherine Giles, both climate change scientists at University College London, and Tim Boyd of the Scottish Association for marine Science – all died within the space of a few months in early 2013.

Professor laxon fell down a flight of stairs at a New year’s Eve party at a house in Essex while Dr Giles died when she was in collision with a lorry when cycling to work in London. Dr Boyd is thought to have been struck by lightning while walking in Scotland.

Global Warming? 'Mini Ice Age' on Its Way The Earth will experience a mini ice age starting in 15 years, scientists are warning.

According to AOL, the last mini ice age happened 300 years ago.

At issue are the sun's solar cycles, according to the report, which last about 11 years. The magnetic poles at the northern and southern ends of the planet flip during each cycle. Normally nothing out of the ordinary occurs when this happens, but this time around, the sun's solar activity is expected to drop by 60 percent during a 10-year period beginning in 2030.

Scientists predict the disruption will occur during solar cycle 26 — we're in cycle 24 now, and cycle 25 is expected to hit its peak in 2022, according to the report.

The last mini ice age, according to The Independent, lasted from 1645-1715. The cold winters associated with it apparently caused the River Thames in England to freeze over.

"[In the cycle between 2030 and around 2040] the two waves exactly mirror each other — peaking at the same time but in opposite hemispheres of the sun," Researcher Valentina Zharkova said, according to The Telegraph. "Their interaction will be disruptive, or they will nearly cancel each other."

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Chicago saw a new record low temperature for Feb. 28 Saturday morning, breaking the previous mark that had stood for 131 years, according to the National Weather Service.

The temperature at O'Hare International Airport reached 10 below zero early Saturday, beating the previous record of 0 set in 1884, said meteorologist David Beachler.

The normal high temperature for this time of year is about 40 degrees, Beachler added.

Relative relief from the cold is not far away, with temperatures expected to reach the upper 20s to low 30s Sunday, he said.

Some snow may be seen in areas to the southeast of the city, Beachler said, but accumulation is not expected to be more than one inch.

A blustery winter storm has dumped snow across the West, killing at least five people and forcing residents in some usually sun-soaked cities to bundle up for a frosty New Year’s.

Strong gusts toppled trees in Northern California, killing two people in the town of Paradise on Tuesday. Another person was killed by a tree early Wednesday in Redding.

Two other people died and a third was missing after storm winds broke boats loose from moorings at Santa Catalina Island off the Southern California coast late Tuesday night. The National Weather Service said winds up to 40 miles an hour hit the harbor.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl Osby said one of the dead is a harbor patrol officer and the other is an unidentified citize
