A Christian couple in Oregon say they will be bankrupted by a judge’s decision Friday to fine them $135,000 for refusing to bake a wedding cake for lesbians.

Aaron and Melissa Klein ran a small bakery called “Sweet Cakes by Melissa” for seven years in Gresham, Oregon, but had to shut down their store in 2013 after Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman filed a civil rights complaint against them. Administrative judge Alan McCullough ruled Friday that the funds will go to Cryer and Bowman for “emotional, mental, and physical suffering.”

Samaritan’s Purse is raising funds to help the Kleins pay their fine and meet other expenses. “They have taken a stand for the Word of God, and they should not have to stand alone,” Samaritan’s Purse President Franklin Graham said. “I believe that Christians across our nation will rally around Aaron and Melissa and their five children.

A major rescue operation is underway in the Mediterranean Sea, north of Libya and south of the Italian island of Lampedusa, after a migrant ship carrying as many as 700 people capsized Sunday.

Italy's Coast Guard said at least 24 people are confirmed dead, with the death toll expected to rise into the hundreds. 

BBC reports that only 28 people have been rescued so far. Italian and Maltese ships were involved in the search and rescue operation. Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat put the number of survivors at 50.

It was not clear whether Muscat's figure included the 28 survivors reported by Italy. Maltese search units were aiding rescue efforts.

The Coast Guard said in a statement that the migrants' 66-foot vessel may have overturned because migrants rushed to one side of the craft when they saw a Portuguese merchant vessel approach it late Saturday night. The cargo ship had been dispatched to come to the migrants' aid.

Muscat said rescuers were seeing people in the sea and were "checking who is alive and who is dead."

I have a dream.

I have a dream that I will wake up one day in a country where we don’t have to go to court or pass a law to protect our fundamental natural rights—from the government.

I have a dream of a place where elected officials have so much regard for the Constitution that they memorize it like Scripture, in order to not sin against it.

I have a dream about a country where it doesn’t matter if you are on the right or the left, because you have so much respect for the freedoms you were given that you’d do nothing to put those liberties at risk.

If you told me that America in 2015 was such a place, I’d have to say, “April Fools” and go back to sleep.

Unfortunately, the joke is on us.

States have been forced to pass laws in order to protect the First Amendment right of Americans to practice their faith and believe as they choose—if they happen to own a certain type of business.

The fact that new laws are necessary to uphold a fundamental right is a travesty.

Surely you’ve heard about this. What do you do when you hear about it? Ignore it? Tell yourself there’s nothing you can do about it? Say that it’s prophesied, so let it play out? Meanwhile, more of your brothers and sisters are slaughtered.

ISIS is attacking historic Christian towns and destroying churches and artifacts in both Iraq and Syria. More than 125,000 Christians – men, women and children – have been forced from their homes over the last 10 months in Iraq. In 2003, there were 1.9 million Christians in the country; today there are less than 150,000! Christian women and children are being raped and put on the slave market in Muslim countries. ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has even vowed to lead the Muslim conquest of Rome, headquarters of the Catholic Church.

The original Crusades were a protective action against the Islamic conquest of the Holy Land. Have today’s Christians become so beaten down that even self-preservation is not sufficient motivation to act?
