 Who were China's Red Guards?

During the Cultural Revolution in China, which took place between 1966 and 1976,Mao Zedong mobilized groups of devoted young people to carry out his new program.  Mao sought to enforce communist dogma and to rid the nation of the so-called "Four Olds" - old customs, old culture, old habits and old ideas.

This Cultural Revolution was an obvious bid for a return to relevancy by the founder of the People's Republic of China, who had been sidelined after some of his more disastrous policies such as the Great Leap Forward killed tens of millions of Chinese.

 Nonetheless, when Mao issued his call, millions of youths answered, forming groups known as the "Red Guards."

The first Red Guards groups were made up of students, ranging from as young as elementary school up to university students. As the Cultural Revolution gained momentum, mostly younger workers and peasants joined the movement, as well.  Many were no doubt motivated by sincere commitment to the doctrines espoused by Mao, although one suspects that some simply wanted to smash things.

The Red Guards destroyed antiques, ancient texts, and Buddhist temples. Pekingese dogs were associated with the old imperial regime, so very few of them survived past the Cultural Revolution and the excesses of the Red Guards.3

 The breed very nearly went extinct in its homeland.  

The Red Guards also publicly humiliated teachers, monks, former landowners or anyone else suspected of being "counter-revolutionary."  Suspected "rightests" would be publically humiliated, sometimes by being paraded through the streets of their town with mocking placards hung around their necks.  In time, the public shaming grew increasingly violent.

 Thousands of people were killed outright, and many more committed suicide as a result of their ordeal.  The final death toll is not known.

Houston Voters Reject Nondiscrimination Measure

HOUSTON, Texas – Voters of Houston came out in massive numbers and soundly rejected Mayor Annise Parker’s ordinance proposal that would have allowed men to enter women’s bathrooms, showers and changing areas based on gender identification. The HERO (Houston Equal Rights Ordinance) proposition was rejected by a vote of 61 to 39 percent with 95 percent of the ballots counted.

The proposition would see nearly a quarter million voters take to the polls to send a clear message to the city’s leaders. “Houstonians sent a clear message and voted for common sense by rejecting this dangerous ordinance,” said Briscoe Cain who worked with Campaign for Houston, the group which opposed the measure.

Harris County GOP Chairman Paul Simpson told Breitbart Texas in an interview Tuesday night, “Thanks to the efforts of our precinct chairs, Republican volunteers and activists, and dedicated staff, HCRP made over 100,000 volunteer phone calls and knocked on 30,000 doors to turn out conservative voters to defeat HERO.”

“This is a national game changer,” said Jonathan Saenz, president of Texas Values Action, in a statement obtained by Breitbart Texas. “Today’s vote is a massive victory for common sense, safety, and religious freedom, not just in Houston, but for all of Texas. The eyes of the nation were on Houston, and the people sent a clear message and soundly rejected this intentionally deceptive and dangerous ordinance.”

“Millions of dollars pouring in from national LGBT extremists, an out-of-control Mayor, and a sustained media onslaught could not overcome the tireless efforts of Houston pastors and people of faith standing for common sense, safety, and liberty,” Saenz continued. “I was born and raised in Houston, and I had faith Houstonians would do the right thing, and they did. This vote will impact the nation and shows, once again, that the people still support common sense Texas values.”

The Houston mayoral election was also impacted by this ordinance. Texas State Representative Sylvester Turner, who supports the ordinance, will now face off against Houston businessman Bill King who soundly opposes the ordinance proposition. Turner was expected to be the odds on favorite but ended up with only an 11 point lead. The coming runoff election for mayor of Houston in December will give voters another opportunity to reject this ordinance and the values it represents.

For the first time in recent years, the Harris County GOP has taken a proactive role in the city election. Chairman Paul Simpson talked repeatedly throughout the night about how this ordinance and the conservative candidates running for mayor and city controller brought out not only voters, but massive numbers of volunteers who generated even more voter turnout.

The statistics in the chart are provided by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The ORR figures defined refugees from the “Middle East” as being from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, and Yemen.

During the time period referenced in the chart (FY2008 to FY2013), the United States admitted 115,617 refugees from the Middle East and granted asylum to another 10,026. Immigrant-led homes in the United States tap with frequency into the welfare system.

Households led by immigrants, both legal and illegal, tap into the nation’s welfare system at a level that’s higher than families deemed “non-immigrant” – to the tune of 51 percent in 2012, a new study found.

The Center for Immigration Studies reported in a just-released 52-page document the welfare rates for immigrant households are “a good deal higher than use rates shown by other Census data.”

Ann Coulter’s back, and she’s never been better than in “Adios, America!: The Left’s Plan to Turn our Country into a Third World Hellhole.”

Specifically, CIS looked at Census data regarding Medicaid and cash, food and housing benefits. And in a comparison of legal and illegal immigrant households versus native citizen households, the Census Bureau’s Survey of Income and Program Participation data indicated “immigrant households use welfare at significantly higher rates than native households,” CIS reported.

For example, 51 percent of households headed by either an illegal or legal immigrant tapped into at least one welfare program in 2012, compared to 30 percent of native households, CIS said.

“Immigrant households have much higher use of food programs (40 percent vs. 22 percent for natives) and Medicaid (42 percent vs. 23 percent),” CIS reported. “Immigrant use of cash programs is somewhat higher than natives (12 percent vs. 10 percent) and use of housing programs is similar to natives.”

The report also found both “new arrivals and well-established immigrants” utilize the taxpayer funded programs at similarly high rates.

“Of households headed by immigrants who have been in the country for more than two decades,” CIS reported, “48 percent access welfare.”

And the breakdown by country of origin is even more enlightening.

CIS found: “Welfare use varies among immigrant groups. Households headed by immigrants from Central America and Mexico (73 percent), the Caribbean (51 percent), and Africa (48 percent) have the highest overall welfare use. Those from East Asia (32 percent), Europe (26 percent), and South Asia (17 percent) have the lowest.”

The study concluded low education levels among immigrants, and the “resulting low incomes,” explained the high welfare use, at least in part – but certainly not all.

U.S. intelligence ships, aircraft, and satellites are closely watching a Russian military vessel in the Atlantic that has been sailing near a U.S. nuclear missile submarine base and underwater transit routes, according to Pentagon officials.

The Russian research ship Yantar has been tracked from the northern Atlantic near Canada since late August as it makes its way south toward Cuba.

Defense officials familiar with reports on the Russian ship say the Yantar is believed to be gathering intelligence on underwater sensors and other equipment used by U.S. nuclear submarines based at Kings Bay, Georgia. The submarines, their transit lanes, and training areas stretch from the coastal base through the Atlantic to Europe.

Intelligence analysts believe the ship, one of Russia’s newest military research vessels commissioned earlier this year, is part of a larger strategic intelligence-gathering operation against U.S. nuclear missile submarines and other targets.

One official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the information, said the ship is a concern because it is equipped with deep-sea surveillance craft and cable-cutting equipment.

In addition to cutting or tapping into undersea cables, the Yantar’s gear also could be used to rescue submarines if they become entangled in underwater cables.

A second defense official said the Yantar’s mission is not only to prepare to disrupt underwater communications. The ship is also part of a Russian underwater reconnaissance program to identify undersea communications trunk lines and nodes.

A major target of the program is the Department of Defense Information Network, known as DoDIN. Moscow is seeking to map the global information network that is vital for U.S. warfighters and policymakers and is a key target of Russian information warfare efforts.

The network includes dedicated military links as well as leased communications and computer systems.

Another concern related to the sea-based intelligence activities is that Russia has been adopting new warfighting techniques the Pentagon has dubbed hybrid warfare.

Hybrid conflict combines traditional military capabilities with information warfare techniques, such as cyber attacks. The disabling of undersea Internet cables could be a part of future hybrid warfare attacks as nations become increasingly reliant on global information networks, officials said.

#BREAKING Wall Street Set to Plunge Amid Global Market Selloff @FOX

U.S. equity markets were poised for a sharp selloff on Monday as fears about a global economic slowdown plagued global investors.

As of 8:00 a.m. ET, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures tumbled 619 points, or 3.73 % to 15861. S&P 500 futures dropped 64 points, or 3.34 % to 1907, while Nasdaq 100 futures plunged 205 points, or 4.85% to 3998.

Today’s Markets

One session after the Dow officially entered correction territory, Wall Street appeared set to extend a selloff in global equity markets as worries about significant deterioration in China sparked fear in the minds of investors around the world. The concern comes as traders wonder what the next shoe to drop is from Chinese officials to stem the bleeding. The world’s second-largest economy moved two weeks ago to devalue its currency, the yuan, on the heels of continued weakness in its economic data.

“Regardless of what the Chinese government and PBoC might be saying and doing, they are currently learning a lesson that many have learned before them, namely you can only fight against market forces for so long before you end up losing,” Alastair McCaig, IG market analyst, said in a note Monday morning.

China’s Shanghai Composite Index plummeted more than 9% during the session Monday, and closed down 8.5% pushing equity markets in Asia to give up their 2015 gains. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng tumbled 5.17%, while Japan’s Nikkei dropped 4.61%.

As the carnage spread, European equity markets didn’t fare much better. The Euro Stoxx 50, which tracks large-cap companies in the eurozone, declined 3.73%, plunging further into correction territory after notching its worst week in four years last week. The German Dax shed 3.53%, while the French CAC 40 sank 3.87%, and the UK’s FTSE 100 dropped 3.44 %.
