The European Commission, the most powerful body in the EU, is planning web regulation described by one politician as “its most dangerous yet.” Draft documents, leaked by bloggers, shows the Commission planning to regulate hyperlinks, one of the foundational forms of communication on the web.

The new rules would hold all online actors, from search engines to ordinary users, legally responsible for the act of hyperlinking (this is a hyperlink). If a hyperlink leads to copyrighted content, the draft EU rules would force users to ask for permission from the copyright holder before linking.

According to Julia Reda, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) representing the Pirate Party, the proposed regulations would ensure “each weblink would become a legal landmine and would allow press publishers to hold every single actor on the Internet liable.”

In other words, search engines like Google would have to ask publishers like Breitbart for permission before linking to our articles. This may provide some short-term advantages to publishers like us — but it would also cripple ordinary communication on the internet.

There are concerns that the European Commission wants to use hyperlink regulation to bolster the publishing industry, which has been hit by the decline of paper publishing and online ad revenue. The EU has a history of protectionism in industries like agriculture, and Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, has called on the E.U to “act” now to protect old media publishers from the threat posed by the internet.

Julia Reda thinks that publishers have too much sway in the EU: “The publishers are clearly wielding so much influence through lobbying that there is nothing that can stop big-party politicians from trying to misapply copyright law in order to support obsolete business models.”

Merced Sheriff officials identifying U.C. Merced stabbing suspect as freshman student

Merced Couty Sheriff Vern Warnke has identified the University of California Merced attacker who wounded four in a mass stabbing spree as 18-year-old Faisal Mohammad.

He was a freshman from Santa Clara.

Breitbart News previously reported the stabbings at UC Merced, which occurred around 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Police shot and killed Mohammad after the stabbings.

According to the Merced Sun-Star, Warnke identified Mohammad as the attacker and said the motive for the attack was “still unclear.”

There is an ongoing spate of mass stabbing attacks in Israel, where Palestinian Muslims have been encouraged by political and religious leaders to stab civilians. It was not clear whether there was any connection between the UC Merced attack and those attacks. Police intend to release more details at a press conference later in the day.

UC Mercred tweeted that five persons were wounded in the mass stabbing shortly after the attack took place, but Warnke indicated the actual number of wounded was four. And he explained that those four included “two students, a female student advisor and a construction worker who was on campus for a remodeling project.”

Warnke says the FBI is involved in the investigation, particularly as it relates to ascertaining a motive.

At this point investigators believe “Mohammad entered a second-floor classroom as class was starting Wednesday and struggled with a male student, who was stabbed. The construction worker–31-year-old Byron Price–“heard the commotion and went to intervene.” Warnke stressed that apart from Price’s intervention, the first stabbing victim might be dead.

Mohammad turned his attention to Price, “[slashing] him around the waist during the confrontation.” Mohammad is believed to have fled the building thereafter, stabbing another male student and a female student advisor outside.

Mohammad was chased onto a bridge by two university police officers, where he was shot and killed. The identity of the officers has not been released, nor have the identities of any of the victims other than Price.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) --

The Merced County Sheriff's Office said the suspect has been identified as UC Merced student 18-year-old Faisal Mohammad.

Authorities say Mohammad stabbed four people on the UC Merced campus Wednesday before he was shot and killed by campus police.The four victims included two students, one staff member and one construction worker. The Sheriff's office said as of Thursday morning, one student remains hospitalized but is expected to recover, and the other student was treated and released. The staff member suffered a collapsed lung and was recovering Thursday after successful surgery. The construction worker was treated and released Wednesday.

Mohammad was a first year Computer Science and Engineering major from Santa Clara. His suitemate at the college dormitories, Andrew Velasquez, said he didn't talk much and kept to himself. "Every time I would try and say something he would just ignore it."

An Idaho militia group protested the arrival of Syrian refugees by issuing dark warnings based on anti-Muslim conspiracy theories.

The III% Idaho group rallied Monday outside the statehouse in Boise, where about 100 anti-government activists, many wearing flak jackets and other armor, waved American flags and banners promoting their pro-gun militia group, reported Hatewatch.

“This isn’t some made-up crap we’re spewing out here, like they’re leading you to believe across the way,” shouted Brandon Curtiss, president of the right-wing group.

Actually, “made-up crap” describes a lot of what the III% Idaho group is spewing.

The group has been protesting the College of Southern Idaho’s refugee resettlement program for several weeks, warning that Islamic State radicals were sending “sleeper” terrorists to western nations among refugees from war-torn Syria.

About 300 refugees are expected to be screened and then resettled in communities throughout the state.

Federal authorities admit that gaps do exist in screening Syrian refugees, but they said these migrants will still undergo extensive background checks — although the results are confidential, which makes it difficult to assure alarmists.

“There are many terrorist organizations out there who have stated numerous times that they will manipulate the refugee crisis to spread radical Islam,” said Chris McIntire, a spokesman for the III% group.

More than 81,000 unaccompanied minors have been released to sponsors inside the U.S. over last two years, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The U.S.-Mexico border has experienced a surge in unaccompanied minors entering the country illegally over the past couple years. As the HHS data reveals, most of these unaccompanied minors have been relocated to states around the U.S.

Last fiscal year, which ended on September 30, 27,520 accompanied minors were placed with sponsors in the U.S. In FY 2014, the government placed another 53,518 unaccompanied minors throughout the U.S.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), which is part of HHS, has placed children in every state in the U.S., including the District of Columbia. States with the highest numbers of unaccompanied minors over the past two years include California (9,587), Florida (8,330), Georgia (3,075), Maryland (5,668), New Jersey (4,120), New York (8,570), North Carolina (2,897), Texas (10,618), and Virginia (5,563).

In FY 2014 Border Patrol apprehended more than 68,540 unaccompanied minors attempting to illegally enter the U.S. via the southern border. Another 39,970 unaccompanied minors were apprehended illegally crossing the border in FY 2015. Most of these minors are from Central America — largely from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

Unaccompanied minors from noncontiguous counties are granted special protections, including a court hearing and access to the U.S. under the care of a sponsor while they await those hearing. The government places the vast majority of these unaccompanied children with a relative in the U.S.

“When a child who is not accompanied by a parent or legal guardian is apprehended by immigration authorities, the child is transferred to the care and custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR),” HHS explains. “Federal law requires that ORR feed, shelter, and provide medical care for unaccompanied children until it is able to release them to safe settings with sponsors (usually family members), while they await immigration proceedings. These sponsors live in many states.”

Notably, HHS officials have testified before Congress that the government does not verify the immigration status of the sponsors with whom they place the minors. The vastmajority of minors are placed with family members.

#U.S. ATTY ANDREW LUGER CHASES ‘ISLAMOPHOBIA’ IN MINNESOTA @Breitbart

U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger writes in an op-ed in Tuesday’sMinneapolis Star-Tribune that “[t]he current wave of Islamophobia needs to be stopped in its tracks”–and that he is determined to stop it.

Luger draws on childhood experiences of being bullied, as a Jew, in the 1970s. Back then, he says, his father taught him to fight back. Not today: “For good reason, we no longer teach our children this approach to solving problems.”

Instead, we need federal prosecutors.

It is not clear what “wave of Islamophobia” Luger means. Statistics show that Jews are still the victims in the vast majority of religious hate crimes. (Many perpetrators are Muslim–especially when Palestinians go to war against Israel overseas.)

There is a growing amount of negative commentary about the Islamic world, but that it because so much of it now comes from the Islamic world itself, in the form of ISIS execution films and the like.

As Luger is no doubt aware, ISIS has targeted Minnesota for recruiting among recent Muslim immigrants. Public concern about that is hardly evidence of discrimination.

There is, however, some other interesting evidence: Luger’s campaign contributions.

Luger gave nearly $50,000 to Democrats before being appointed in 2013. He maxed out to Hillary Clinton in 2008, and Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. He also gave to

, for whom “Islamophobia” is a favorite hobbyhorse.

Luger’s op-ed may be aimed at building trust with the Muslim community, so that authorities can gain information they need to stop, and to punish, terrorism.

Less charitably, Luger’s approach endorses the Obama administration’s denial when it comes to radical Islam.

Discrimination against Muslims happens, and is both illegal and wrong. But speaking out against radical Islam is not hate speech, and has nothing to do with religious bigotry.

Update: Luger served on the Minnesota board of J Street, a radical left-wing organization that typically opposes Israel in Congress. Though billing itself as “pro-Israel,” the George Soros-funded J Street has opposed Israel’s defensive wars in Gaza, supported the defamatory Goldstone report alleging that Israel committed war crimes against Palestinians, and worked against sanctions on Iran. Luger joined, he wrote, after his daughter interned there.

Luger also defended J Street president Jeremy Ben-Ami after he was exposed for lyingabout Soros’s donations to the group. He also demonized J Street’s critics, saying that they should “give up the grassy knoll.”

Luger’s role as a  leader in an organization that has become increasingly extreme over time–even hosting the execrable Saeb Erekat to address its most recent conference–suggests his focus on “Islamophobia” is ideologically-driven–and worrying.
