The world learned another great lesson taught by four courageous Americans (U.S. Airman Spencer Stone (age 22), National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos (age 22), Anthony Sadler (age 23), and Mark Moogalian (age 51). Resolute, courageous, and strong, the four took down radical Islamic terrorist Ayoub El-Khazzani (age 26) with nothing more than their bare hands. A grateful nation looks with pride upon its finest citizens.
Intent on mass genocide, El-Khazzani boarded a Paris bound high speed train with an AK-47, several magazines, pistols, and a box cutter. Seated near Khazzani on the train, French-American professor Mark Moogalian noticed that he appeared to be ready to employ an AK-47. Moogalian seized the weapon but was then shot in the neck by Khazzani who was wielding a pistol. As Khazzani began to fire, the three Americans, on Skarlatos’ cue, “Let’s go,” lept into action, racing toward the fire, and then tackling, punching, and choking El-Khazzani into unconsciousness. They hog-tied El-Khazzani, leaving him in that prone position until authorities took him away outside of Paris.
Stone suffered the brunt of the injuries during the attack on El-Khazzani, losing a part of his finger (reattached by French surgeons) and suffering box cutter slashes to his arm. Despite those injuries, Stone not only nailed El-Khazzani with the aid of Skarlatos and Sadler, he also came to the aid of Moogalian. Stone stuck two of his fingers in the bullet entry wound and staunched the flow of blood, enabling Moogalian to survive long enough for medics to intervene.
This extraordinary act of heroism by the four Americans, of instant action to avert mass bloodshed, is but one of several similar acts of bravery and valor undertaken by Americans against terrorists in the years since 9/11 and is in keeping with our people’s long tradition of selfless acts of heroism despite grave risk and peril. French President Francois Hollande recognized the Americans’ exceptional courage, bestowing upon each of them France’s highest medal of honor, the French Legion of Honor.
