Solo practitioner Jeffrey Steinbrecher probably knows things about cybersecurity that you don't. The 30-year-old Massachusetts native, who specializes in criminal law, has a history of hacking—he hung out with hardcore hacker groups of the 1990s and writing for hacker newsletters and journals."I was never out to do any damage," Steinbrecher reflects. "It was a thrill. It was about sharing knowledge." Today, along with practicing law, the snowboarding and martial arts enthusiast is leveraging his know-how to build Signal 9, a company offering customized, secure Android smartphones to "privacy conscious" government, military and business clients. LTN had a recent conversation with him about his transition.
LTN: What was the genesis of Signal 9?
JS: I started Signal 9 in 2013. After looking for an Android phone that focused on privacy and security, we didn't like the options and decided to make our own. I had written a guide for members of a military community to use to secure their personal phones. Everyone liked it, so we started Signal 9 to provide these secured phones to the wider public.
We buy Google Nexus 5 handsets and design the phones to be resistant to forensic examination and eavesdropping. We build them without backdoors. We are working on the next iteration, which will include a panic button, stronger encryption and a software firewall.
