Chicago schools to pay $13 million for police

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

The Chicago Public Schools will pay police $13 million a year for the dozens of officers now assigned to the city's high schools.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the agreement introduced by Mayor Rahm Emanuel is about $5 million more than the school district had been paying until 2011. But the figure isn't as much as the amount the mayor imposed when he took office that year.

According the paper, when the mayor stripped teachers of a previously negotiated 4 percent pay raise he used the $80 million in savings to pay the police department retroactively to 2009.
