If Barack Obama and John Kerry’s bizarre intervention on Hamas’ behalf against Israel over the weekend seems confusing, it’s because you’re talking their boilerplate rhetoric about being “friends to Israel” who respect her “right to defend herself” seriously.  Obama regards Turkey as a more valuable ally than Israel.  Turkey is run by an increasingly deranged Islamist who is very eager to keep Hamas in the game.  Obama is also miffed at Egypt, which overthrew the Muslim Brotherhood government Obama once celebrated as a triumph of his “Arab Spring” foreign policy.  Egypt under the Brotherhood would have been helping Hamas right now; instead, they’re blowing up Hamas tunnels that protrude into their territory.

Deaths in Gaza said to top 1,000 - IDF death toll rises to 40

Hamas officials in the Gaza Strip report that the death toll in Gaza rose above 1,000 dead on Saturday as more than 100 bodies were pulled from the rubble of homes throughout the coastal enclave during a truce.

The grim milestone came on the 19th day of a conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement, during a 12-hour truce that allowed Gaza residents to pick through the ruins of their homes.

Israel says hundreds of the Gaza dead are Hamas gunmen, and Gaza officials acknowledge that there are “fighters” among the dead.

With three hours left to the truce, it has been observed by both sides. The security cabinet is set to discuss an extension of the humanitarian truce at 8:30 p.m., just after it expires, at Tel Aviv’s Defense Ministry headquarters.

Top Israeli analyst lambastes Hanoi John

Channel 2′s Ehud Ya’ari, one of Israel’s most respected Middle East commentators, lambastes Kerry for having jetted off to Paris to meet with the Europeans, Turks and Qatar, with no Egyptians, no representatives of Mahmoud Abba’s PA, and no Israelis present.

The secretary is meeting with the champions of Hamas, and “fleeing from the Egyptian ceasefire initiative, which Abbas and Israel accepted,” Ya’ari fumes.

The key element of the Egyptian proposal was an unconditional ceasefire, to be followed by negotiations. The diplomats in Paris, by contrast, are tilting toward Hamas by discussing various ceasefire preconditions such as lifting the security blockade on the Strip. (That Egyptian-Israeli blockade has prevented even more potent weaponry being imported into Gaza by Hamas for using against Israel.)

Ya’ari’s comments reflect a very widespread sense in Israel of disappointment — to put it mildly — in Kerry.

As tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is heading back to the region to continue pursuing a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas — but he may not be welcome this time around.

Former Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren believes that America’s presence isn’t welcome at all. During an interview with an Israel news network on Monday, Oren said that Kerry coming to the region is “to our chagrin.” Oren cited Kerry’s history of failed attempts at peace negotiations in the region, and strained U.S. relations with Egypt, as well as the Obama administration’s poor relationship with both Israel and Palestine.

Kerry left on Monday for Egypt, where he will continue to negotiate discussions of the continually failing cease-fire. The White House hopes to return to the November 2012 ceasefire agreement, and also emphasized the need to protect civilian lives, both in Gaza and in Israel.

Kerry spent nine months pursuing peace talks between Israel and Palestine from 2013 to 2014, but abandoned the effort recently after each attempt proved to be futile. Since violence has taken off between the Israelis and the Palestinians in recent weeks, Egypt has attempted to broker two separate cease-fires. While Israel complied with each request, Hamas has refused to agree and has repeatedly ignored Egypt’s requests.

Lurch (er, Kerry) vows 'intense support' to counter Isis

US Secretary of State John Kerry has vowed "intense and sustained support" for Iraq after meeting key politicians in the capital, Baghdad.

He said attacks by Sunni militants were a threat to Iraq's existence, and the next days and weeks would be critical.

The insurgents are expanding their control of towns in the north and west.

They are bearing down on a vital dam near Haditha, and have captured all of the border crossings to Syria and Jordan from government forces.

The key airport in the northern town of Tal Afar has also fallen, with some reports saying the town itself has been captured.

Iraq conflict: Militants 'seize' city of Tal Afar

Sunni militants have seized the northern Iraqi city of Tal Afar, officials and residents say.

Militants led by ISIS - the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant - captured key cities including Mosul and Tikrit last week, but some towns were retaken.

UN human rights chief Navi Pillay said the "apparently systematic series of executions [of non-combatants] almost certainly amounted to war crimes".

The US earlier announced it might use drone strikes to halt the ISIS advance.

US Open to stabbing Israel in the back, Kerry Says

(WASHINGTON) -- The United States and Iran may find themselves unlikely allies in the fight against Sunni extremists in Iraq, Secretary of State John Kerry indicated Monday.

Kerry said the United States would be willing to work with Iran on ways to stem the progress of ISIS, the militant army whose formal name is the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

“We’re open to discussions,” Kerry said during an interview with Yahoo News’ Katie Couric. “I think we might be open to any constructive process that could minimize the violence, hold Iraq together, the integrity of the country, and eliminate the presence of outside terrorist forces.”

American officials directly involved in the failed Israeli-Palestinian peace process over the last nine months gave a leading Israeli columnist a withering assessment of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the negotiations, indicated that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has completely given up on the prospect of a negotiated solution, and warned Israel that the Palestinians will achieve statehood come what may — either via international organizations or through violence.

Speaking on condition of anonymity to Nahum Barnea, a prominent columnist from Israel’s best-selling daily Yedioth Aharonoth, the officials highlighted Netanyahu’s ongoing settlement construction as the issue “largely to blame” for the failure of Secretary of State John Kerry’s July 2013-April 2014 effort to broker a permanent peace accord.
